As a refuge for writers, Monserrate lured tourists from all over the world, especially the British, who were especially enamored by its beauty, immortalizing it in engravings and memoirs. When the wealthy British entrepreneur and exceptional art collector, Francis Cook, came here in the 18th century, he fell in love. The Park and Palace of Monserrate, a Romantic masterpiece, emerged from this ardor.

Sacred Art Room

Often referred to as the small museum, the sacred art room houses a notable collection of art and religious artefacts. These artefacts were curated by Francis Cook. The Sacred art room also features a stained glass window that lends to the religious artefacts museum ambience.

Main Hall

The main hall is the central atrium of the Monserrate palace. The towering arches and domes are indicative of the gothic architectural influence of the time. The grand interior welcomes people to the rest of Monserrate Park and the Palace complex.

Library

Francis Cook and his associates made an office out of the Monserrate Palace library. The entrance of the room can be blocked off with an ornate and heavy wooden door. Do you know? The door itself is considered a piece of art.

Billiards Room

During Francis Cook’s time, the men would usually smoke following a meal. In the absence of an actual smoking room, they made good use of the billiards room. The room features beautiful Porphyry engravings that elevated the charm of the room.

Music Room

Francis Cook regarded the Music room as his main hall. This is where he would greet guests. This space also doubled as a party room where the Cooks would host soirees. The room also had good acoustics, this was done so that the musicians could entertain the guests properly.

Fern Valley

Under the able guidance of William Stockdale and James Knowles, the Monserrate garden could feature some of the rarest and most beautiful gardens in the world. The garden also has a vast collection of arboreal ferns that were sourced from New Zealand and Australia.

Chapel

The current chapel that stands here used to have the original chapel for Our Lady of Monserrate. The current chapel has artificial ruins built by Gerard de Visme. The chapel was also used to house three sarcophagi that served as garden ornaments. They are now housed in the São Miguel de Odrinhas Archaeological Museum in Sintra.

Rose Garden

Through his expansive rose gardens you could tell Francis Cook’s love of roses. He considered roses to be the Queen of flowers. They sourced roses from all around the world. The rose garden is a must-visit when going to Monserrate Palace and the park.

Staircase on the Scented Path

This clever piece of architecture takes influence from the palace of Monserrate. The staircase on the scented path connects the outside of the palace to the inside. The Staircase on the Scented Path structure rises above the fish tank which gives it a scenic view.

Mexican Garden

The Mexican garden strategically makes use of the driest and warmest part of the Monserrate complex. The garden is watered through a series of water-carrying systems. The water system features a canal, water pathways, and water tanks. It is a must-visit in the Monserrate palace complex for the beautiful collection of warm climate plants.

This is the main entrance for visitors exploring the park and the palace. It leads to the ticket booth and the beginning of the guided tour route. This section was created for Monserrate family and visitors. As is typical of British summer cottages, its centralized position allowed for easy, comfortable movement. This connected the garden to the sitting, music, and billiards rooms without walking via the Library or Main Entranceway and allowed access to the top floor stairway.

Located on the east side of the palace, this entrance was likely used historically by the occupants for formal entries. However, it's currently not accessible to the public.

Everything went smoothly from entry to exploring the Moorish Castle. It wasn’t overly crowded during our visit, so there was plenty of space to walk around, explore at our own pace, and enjoy the views without feeling rushed. The whole experience was easy and well organized. Definitely worth visiting while in Sintra!

Unfortunately we paid for this admission twice. The view and visit to the castle was breathtaking . I only wish there was alittle more direction as to how to approach the castle viewing as we ran out of time to explore the entire area.

We had a beautiful day and enjoying every moment. The waiting time was 15 minutes and worth every penny .The Palace is beautiful and very well maintained.The hiking trail was absolutely amazing. We definitely came back to finish all trails and visiting all places surrounded.

Awesome to see all the detail work. If taking the bus #1253, please note it does no longer let you off near the palace. The stop directions tell you to take you will have to hike up the mountain for about an hour. Better to take bus into Sintra then take the shuttle loop to palace. But definitely go even under restoration it was cool to see and grounds are beautiful

We really enjoyed/loved this trip! The place itself was incredible. Even if it was 36 degrees you could stay in the shadow and enjoy this place! We arrived way too early, and there's no café/vending machine while waiting (but a toilet!). (There's a café/place where you can eat while you are inside) there are also cafés if you choose to go down again to the nearest place. As it says in the email, download your audio guide Before coming to Quinta! 🙃 (otherwise you can stil buy an audioguide at the entrance for 5 € per device. A Must see place I have to say! But book tickets in advance, they were totally sold out on the day we were there! We will sure be back here sometime ! The Headout app worked great! (Download the tickets so you can access them without internet but there's a wifi at the entrance at least, people got helped at least)

I arrived late because the 435 bus wasn't running, so I took the 434 bus since someone told me it would be a 5-minute walk—but in the end, I had to walk 20 minutes. It's okay, though, because they let me in at the last minute. I’m really glad I got the audio guide because Quinta da Regaleira is very large, and it helped me figure out what to see in a specific order more easily and avoid getting lost. I found the audio guide very useful and interesting! (Especially the little tips.) I really liked the first cave, which is bright inside, and the passages and caves that seem secret (the labyrinth cave is scary, but I thought it was super cool to go through it). Quinta da Regaleira is well worth the price—there’s so much to discover. The Headout website offers tips for your visit (wear appropriate shoes since there’s a lot of walking, bring water, sunscreen, etc.). I chose the 12:30 p.m. time slot and was able to finish everything by 5:40 p.m. (while taking lots of photos and taking a short break to sit down). I don’t regret booking through this site at all—especially since the audio guide is just an extra €2!
