About Castelo de S. Jorge

Sitting snugly atop Lisbon's highest hill, the Castelo de São Jorge is one of Lisbon’s most emblematic landmarks. The site's fortifications date back to the 2nd century BC, and archaeological findings reveal traces of Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, and Muslims, showcasing continuous human occupation since ancient times.

The Castle Hill, occupied since the 8 BC, has a rich history with Celtic tribes, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors contributing to its fortifications.

King Alfonso Henriquez, aided by crusaders, captured the Castle from the Moors, using it as a royal residence until the 1755 earthquake.

The Castle served as a fortified residence for Alfonso III in 1255, underwent renovations by King Denis I, and had a protective wall built by King Ferdinand I.

Sao Jorge Castle is also home to annex buildings like the former Royal Palace of the Alcáçova. The royal palace was destroyed in the earthquake of 1755, but its traces remain at the Sao Jorge Castle. The building now houses the Permanent Exhibition, cafés, and Casa do Leão Restaurant. The romantic garden and patio have unique architectural features that provide insight into the former majesty of the royal residence.

Archaeological Site

Sao Jorge Castle is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Lisbon. The ruins found in the castle hold evidence of three periods in Lisbon's history: the first known settlement from the 7th century BC, the second from the Moorish era residential area from the mid-11th century, and the third from the last palatine residence in the former alcáçova. This makes Sao Jorge Castle Lisbon's most impressive archaeological site.

West Gatehouse

This is the main entrance to the castle and is located on the west side of the walls. It is the most impressive of the three entrances, with a large archway and two towers. 

South Vaulted Passage

South Vaulted Passage

This entrance is located on the south side of the walls and is smaller than the West Gatehouse. It is a covered passageway that leads to the castle courtyard.

North Gatehouse

North Gatehouse

This entrance is located on the north side of the walls and is the smallest of the three entrances. It is a simple gatehouse with no towers.

The architecture of the Monastery is amazing. The waiting line under the summer sun can be long to endure, and the visit inside won't be a long one, because it's actually a small place, but it's absolutely worth the visit, it feels magical. Don't forget to get some pasteis de Belem to eat not far from the Monastery.

Everything went smoothly from entry to exploring the Moorish Castle. It wasn’t overly crowded during our visit, so there was plenty of space to walk around, explore at our own pace, and enjoy the views without feeling rushed. The whole experience was easy and well organized. Definitely worth visiting while in Sintra!

Review of Castelo de São Jorge Castelo de São Jorge in Lisbon is definitely worth a visit. The castle is perched atop a hill and offers a stunning view of the city, the Tagus River, and the surrounding neighborhoods. The ancient walls and towers give you a good sense of Lisbon’s history. It’s fun to walk around and explore different parts of the castle. I found the view from the castle walls particularly impressive. It can get crowded, and the admission fee isn’t cheap. Still, I think it’s a beautiful attraction that you should definitely include in your visit to Lisbon. I give the castle 4 out of 5 stars.

An incredible experience! The Lisbon Aquarium is truly magnificent and very well maintained. The different exhibits are immersive, the animals are impressive, and the large central tank is fascinating. You can easily spend several hours there without getting bored. It was a visit that was as enjoyable as it was educational. I 100% recommend it to anyone visiting Lisbon.
