About Quinta da Regaleira

Quinta da Regaleira appears as though conjured from the very stones of Sintra's mountain, its towers and bridges seeming not of human creation but rather fashioned by the spirits of nature. It exists in a realm half-real, half-imagined. Through ingenious architecture drawing from myriad mystical beliefs across time and cultures, the palace is quite enchanting!

Did you know?

The "Initiation Well" isn't actually a well: This iconic 98-foot tower resembles a well but lacks any water source. Instead, it serves as a symbolic descent, with a spiral staircase leading down nine levels, representing Dante's nine circles of Hell. Some believe it was used for initiation rituals by secret societies.

Hidden messages in plain sight: Look closely, and you'll find Freemason and Templar symbols subtly incorporated into the architecture and sculptures. The stained glass windows, gargoyles, and even the gatehouse hold coded messages waiting to be deciphered.

An enigmatic grotto with a reversed compass: Step inside the "Grotto of the Grotto" and find a compass embedded in the floor, pointing in the opposite direction. This deliberate inversion fuels speculation about its intended meaning, ranging from mystical symbolism to playful deception.

A secret tunnel leading… where? Underneath the inconspicuous Capela da Santíssima Trindade (Chapel of the Holy Trinity) lies a hidden tunnel leading to the palace kitchen. Its purpose remains unknown, adding to the estate's mysterious allure.

A "Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire": The estate's original owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, was renowned for his wealth and eccentricity. He poured his resources and imagination into creating this masterpiece, earning him the nickname "Monteiro the Millionaire."

Why visit Quinta da Regaleira?

Explore the Initiation Well

This iconic landmark is the crown jewel of the estate. Descend a 27-meter spiral staircase, lined with cryptic symbols and Masonic references, to reach the bottom, representing a journey into the underworld and a quest for knowledge. The well's unique design and symbolism make it an unforgettable experience.

Seek enlightenment in the Grotto of the Leda

This enigmatic grotto features a beautiful statue of Leda and the Swan, a mythological tale with various interpretations. The grotto's acoustics and natural light filtering through create a mesmerizing atmosphere, perfect for quiet contemplation.

Get lost in the enchanting gardens

Wander through the estate's sprawling gardens, filled with diverse plant life, winding paths, and hidden surprises. From romantic grottoes to whimsical fountains, the gardens offer a delightful escape into a world of natural beauty and wonder.

It's steeped in symbolism

The estate was built by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a man who was fascinated by Freemasonry, alchemy, and the Knights Templar. He embedded symbols and references to these themes throughout the property, making it a fascinating puzzle to unravel. Even if you don't know much about these things, you'll appreciate the artistry and mystery. If you're interested in The Da Vinci Code, you might recognize some of the symbols from the book at Quinta da Regaleira. It's not directly connected to the story, but it's still a fun connection to make.

A photographer's paradise

With its moss-covered walls, winding staircases, and hidden nooks, Quinta da Regaleira is a dream come true for anyone who loves taking photos. You're guaranteed to capture some truly unique and Instagram-worthy shots.

Unfortunately we paid for this admission twice. The view and visit to the castle was breathtaking . I only wish there was alittle more direction as to how to approach the castle viewing as we ran out of time to explore the entire area.

Huge gardens. Beautifull palace. The palace visit it's fast actually. But the gardnes needs time to be fully visited. Beautifull nature all around. To reach the palace you don't need to follow the main street with the direction: if you go to any other street, you'll reach the top in mostly the same time but with leeees people around.

A magical experience that was the highlight of our trip to Lisbon, the public transport was so straightforward and all the staff we met were extremely friendly and respectful.

I arrived alone to take the tour of Quinta da Regadeira. At first, I hadn’t considered the possibility of taking the tour with a guide, but luckily I did, and the experience was all the more enriching. The information they provided was invaluable; it helped me grasp where I was and understand the history behind that magnificent place. Thank you so much! Highly recommended.

The palace was not overcrowded. Easy to get in Downloaded the guide which was not altogether self explanatory. A lot of the palace was being renovated which restricted where we could go! Needed to be told that before we went in.

Excellent tour with great guides! The day was well organized, the very large group at meeting spot at Rossi Square was broken up by language groups, then broken down again into smaller ones (two, in my case case for English) for the comfortable bus ride to Estoril & Cascais, then onto Sintra. The guides spoke English well, were informative & pleasant. Both castles were incredibly beautiful with fascinating history. Highly recommended -wonderful day.
