The tip that head out gave us to get there at 9 o'clock and get in line for the 930 opening was a great suggestion. By 930. The line was very long and we were some of the first people into the monastery. It wasn't incredible and then we were able to get in the early line to get into the church. The tip was good.

14. Obskugasparawnie i bez problemu

Entramos no horário marcado, fila organizada.

The monastery is beautiful and in very good condition. Francisco, our guide, was full of interesting information. He was first class and made the visit memorable.

I arrived early to stand in line so that I could enter by my scheduled time and when I arrived I found out they were still letting people in from up to two hours before my timed entry because they were running behind! I ended up standing in the blazing hot sun for over an hour and a half, so by the time I got in I had zero energy to enjoy. I did end up entering right at my scheduled time, but I had no idea how the system worked and read online reviews that said to get there early but to me there's no point in arriving too early because you will still have to stand in the line for your specific time slot regardless of when you arrive and the line is outside with no shelter! This didn't make the attraction seem worth it, even though it's beautiful.

  • Step inside Lisbon’s Jerónimos Monastery and explore a UNESCO World Heritage landmark at your own pace.

    Getting started

    What to expect

    Jerónimos Monastery Entry Tickets

The Jerónimos Monastery stands as a masterpiece of Manueline architecture, built in the early 16th century to commemorate Portugal’s Age of Discovery. This monumental site is both a symbol of national identity and a resting place for key figures in Portuguese history.

    Features

    • Southern Portal: Admire the elaborate southern entrance, renowned for its intricate stonework and maritime motifs that reflect Portugal’s seafaring legacy.

    • Cloisters: Walk through the two-level cloisters, where detailed arches and sculpted columns showcase the artistry of the Manueline style.

    • Church of Santa Maria de Belém: Visit the church’s nave, home to the tombs of explorer Vasco da Gama and poet Luís de Camões, both central to Portugal’s cultural heritage.

    • Chapter House and Refectory: Discover the chapter house and refectory, each featuring unique vaulted ceilings and decorative elements that highlight the monastery’s architectural innovation.

    • Upgrades: Deepen your understanding with an optional audio guide, or enjoy a richer narrative with a skip-the-line guided tour. These options are ideal for those who want to uncover hidden stories and architectural significance in detail.

  • What to bring

    • To stay protected and hydrated, bring a hat and water, as summer temperatures can rise above 25ºC.

    What's not allowed

    • Strict dress code: Off-shoulder tops, dresses, and knee-high shorts are not recommended.

    • Visitors are not allowed to photograph some parts of the monastery.

    • Keep in mind that food, beverages, large bags, or backpacks are not allowed on this experience.

    Accessibility

    • The lower level is wheelchair accessible, but some areas have cobblestones and can be tricky to navigate.

    • Wheelchairs are available for rent at the entrance.

    Additional information

    • Going with the upgrade? The audio guide will be accessible via an app. Download instructions will be shared with your ticket. Just make sure to pack your headphones!

    • The church is a part of Jerónimos Monastery and offers free entry, but you must join a separate line to enter.

    • The monastery is a crowd-puller, and wait times can stretch to 2 hours during peak hours. Plan smart: arrive early and book tickets online in advance.

    • To avoid the rush hour madness, we recommend the guided tour with 9:30am priority access.

    • Entry is free for Portugal residents on Sundays and public holidays, which often leads to larger crowds. If possible, plan your visit on another day.

    • The Jerónimos Monastery remains closed on Monday, January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, and December 25.

    • Your voucher will be emailed to you shortly.
    • Display the voucher on your mobile phone with a valid photo ID at the starting point.
