About Oceanario Lisboa

Oceanário Lisboa is split into two levels, with each level subdivided into two blocks that fit together almost squarely. The four sections stand for the four oceans—the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Antarctic. Observe each ocean from a different vantage point as you make your way around the Oceanarium's top floor. As you descend, you'll be able to see the oceans from a fish's perspective. Large fish, sharks, rays, and five million litres of saltwater inhabit the enormous central aquarium in the centre part!

Did you know?

Enjoy the Ocean Sunfish at Oceanarium Lisboa—it's the world's largest bony fish, resembling a child's drawing as it rests on the water's surface. This rare sight is a unique feature of the aquarium, given the challenges in caring for these giant sunbathing rocks.

Keep an eye out for the aquarium's two massive spider crabs, affectionately nicknamed "King" and "Queen." These impressive creatures, with leg spans exceeding 3 meters, are the largest of their kind on display in Europe.

The central tank is larger than four Olympic-sized pools and is home to one hundred kinds of fish and other marine life. Being on two levels allows you to see it from various angles, allowing you to spot fish that might otherwise be difficult to notice.

While the marine life takes center stage, the Oceanário also showcases incredible examples of coastal ecosystems. Look for the recreated salt marshes and rocky shores, teeming with diverse invertebrates and birds, offering a glimpse into the interconnectedness of our planet's habitats.

The Oceanário goes beyond entertainment, actively participating in research and conservation efforts. They've even developed a unique closed-loop water treatment system, recycling 90% of their water, making them a model for sustainable aquarium practices.

Why visit Oceanario Lisboa?

Recognized as the world's best aquarium

Oceanário de Lisboa has been named the best aquarium globally, not one, not twice but three times. A must-visit in Lisbon, it's renowned for its commitment to ocean conservation since 1998.

Explore ecosystems of the world

Explore "One Planet, One Ocean," an exhibition housing over 8,000 animals and plants of 500 species, including sharks, penguins, and corals, representing ecosystems from around the world.

Watch out for the sharks!

You'll love the sharks, like most people. Sharks here get 10 kilograms of seafood twice a week. Keep in mind that sharks are known to lose their teeth periodically; in fact, certain species, like the sandbar shark, may grow to have more than 20,000 teeth!

Award-winning design

Experience Lisbon Oceanarium's innovative architecture designed by Peter Chermayeff, with a central tank surrounded by four distinct ecosystems, providing a 360-degree viewing experience and making visitors feel immersed in the underwater world.

Walk through a rainforest

The aquarium's Tropical Indian Ocean section mimics the look of the Seychelles' coral reefs. Two of Earth's most biologically varied ecosystems are coral reefs and rainforests. Here, you can stroll along a boardwalk in the woods here as you listen to the monkeys and birdsong.

Amazing experience at Oceanário de Lisboa! The aquarium is beautiful, very well organized, and full of fascinating marine life from all around the world. The central tank was absolutely stunning and relaxing to watch. Everything was clean, staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was perfect for both adults and kids. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Lisbon — highly recommended!

Lisbon Beyond the Obvious We didn’t expect much. A soccer stadium is just a soccer stadium, right? Wrong. The tour of Estádio da Luz began, and it was hard not to get excited. Walking through the tunnel the players take before every game, stepping into the locker room, sitting in the substitutes’ seats along the sideline—all of this creates an atmosphere that gradually draws you in. And when the field comes into view, huge and immaculate, it really hits you. The eagles, Benfica’s symbol, complete the scene with a presence that’s impressive up close. The museum, then, capped off the tour perfectly: lots of history, lots of passion, and the feeling of having understood this city a little better. We also underestimated the Oceanário. We thought it would be “just another aquarium.” But the size, the colors, the movements, the incredible variety of marine life—everything there invites you to slow down and take your time looking around. We left there enchanted. And the surrounding Parque das Nações even gave us a bonus that wasn’t on the itinerary. Lisbon is like that: you think you know what you’re going to find, and it surprises you all the same.

The Portuguese royal family’s palace in Sintra is amazing. The highlight for us was the main hall, where the coats of arms of the noble families of that era adorn the ceiling. As for the Pena Palace, it’s like something out of a fairy tale! I loved visiting both...

The National Palace of Sintra delivers a highly efficient historical overview located squarely in the town centre, bypassing the logistical friction of accessing the hilltop estates. The structure is distinguished by its functional 33-metre conical chimneys and serves as Portugal's best-preserved medieval royal residence. The interior layout follows a logical progression through distinct Moorish and Manueline architectural periods, with the Swan Room and Magpie Room providing clear examples of period-accurate tile work and ceiling artistry. Securing digital tickets in advance with Headout completely eliminates the entry queue, ensuring a low-friction start to the visit. Navigation is straightforward, though arriving at opening time is necessary to circumvent the tour group bottlenecks that impede movement. It is a dense, evidence-rich site that effectively communicates the chronological shifts in Portuguese royal history without the excessive time commitment demanded by the larger surrounding parklands
