Did you know?

The construction of the gallery began in December 2006 and was completed in December 2015. The building encompasses over 40,000 square meters, with 8,000 square meters designated for public use. Its three exhibition rooms are spacious, open-plan areas spanning 103 meters in length and 16 meters in width.

The building has received numerous architectural awards, including the COAM Prize (2016), FAD architecture award (2017), and the American Architecture Prize (2017).

The Gallery serves as the primary platform for promoting cultural activities managed by Patrimonio Nacional, showcasing not only the Royal Collections but also highlighting the cultural richness of all Royal Sites.

The idea of constructing a museum to house the Crown's heritage collections dates back to the Second Republic in Spain, with the decree establishing the Museum of Arms and Tapestries. The project gained momentum in 1998 when the government committee approved the construction of the Gallery.

Beyond its role as an exhibition space, the gallery prioritizes the conservation and preservation of cultural assets. It has specialized facilities for the management and conservation of artworks, ensuring their longevity and accessibility for future generations.

The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. We met at the meeting point. We met at the main plaza in front of the opera house. He was very helpful. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience. We didn’t have to wait in line at all—there were long lines, but we didn’t have to wait. We highly recommend it.

The place was, well, majestic. A good example of what unbridled wealth and power can create. My only wish was some fuller explanations of some of what we saw. For example, there were Chinese people presented in one room without any suggestion as to why. But don't let that stop you from viewing this palace, considered one of the world's grandest. And I can't argue with that.

The visit went very well. It was crowded, lots of groups, but that's the price you have to pay to admire this palace. The staff are very welcoming.
