Did you know?

The National Archeological Museum of Naples has a Secret Room, or Gabinetto Segreto, which contains erotic artifacts and sculptures from Pompeii and Herculaneum, capturing their preoccupation with sensual pursuits.

Between 1616 and 1777, the museum was the seat of the University of Naples.

In the 18th century, the museum was also used as army barracks by the Bourbon family and a dumping ground for the looted collections from Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Why visit Naples National Archaeological Museum?

Home to salvaged remnants from the Vesuvius eruption

Beyond the Vesuvian sites

Besides collectibles from Pompeii and Herculaneum, the museum is home to the Farnese collection, a range of marble sculptures, busts and gems of Renaissance Italy. The MANN also contains Egyptian artifacts and copies like frescoes of Anubis, Serapis, etc. reflecting the 'Egyptomania' or preoccupation with this ancient civilization in the Campania region.

Wonderful place to visit, especially the mosaics and freezes from Pompei all set in a beautiful building. We didn't use the digital guide and just followed the map you can download at the museum. Definitely worth a visit, but I would suggest visiting Pompei first.

Both tours are interesting, and there is parking available at the main starting and finishing points near the castle. The commentary is helpful but can sometimes be hard to understand.
