Castel Sant'Angelo and St. Peter's Basilica are both unique experiences, and you should definitely take the time to explore both thoroughly. Thanks to the online tickets, entry to Castel Sant'Angelo was quick and hassle-free. Unfortunately, for St. Peter’s Basilica there is only a ticket voucher, which can only be redeemed on the booked day. The redemption location listed in the confirmation email is a busy square, about 350 meters from the Vatican entrance. With a bit of luck, you’ll find a handful of students (?) there wearing uniforms with rather generic tourist information. Only two of them have a smartphone to check the voucher, and there’s certainly no orderly processing of the waiting crowd. As a result, it took about 15 minutes before I had the printed tickets in my hands, even though there were only three tourists with reservations on site. How much of a wait can you expect when there’s significantly more of a crowd? Once we had the tickets, however, everything went smoothly again at the entrance; you should think carefully, though, about whether you really need the elevator for the first section up to the dome. The elevator operator takes only 10 people per trip, and naturally fewer if there are strollers and/or wheelchair users. Consequently, it can take quite a while before it’s your turn. If you’re in good shape, you’ll definitely get to the top faster on foot. Overall, though, it’s still impressive to see all the art and history on display inside St. Peter’s Basilica.

My visit to Castel Sant’Angelo was one of the highlights of my time in Rome, combining incredible history with breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the Vatican. Walking through the ancient fortress, which once served as Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum and later as a papal refuge, gave me a fascinating glimpse into centuries of Roman history and architecture. The experience became even more memorable at sunset, when the terraces overlooking the Tiber River and St. Peter’s Basilica created an unforgettable atmosphere.

Engelenburcht is a beautiful building, and the audio tour made my visit even more interesting. I often find audio tours a bit tedious or unclear, but this one was easy to follow, very interesting, and just the right length.

Castel Sant'Angelo is located near the Vatican, so the views from the rooftop are fantastic—it's definitely worth a visit. The paintings and statues of the Archangel Michael are incredible.
