Did you know?

This place is where the drama of Henry VIII's six wives unfolded. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were both arrested here – and Jane Seymour sadly passed away, giving birth to the future King Edward VI.

Shakespeare and his crew performed Hamlet and Macbeth for King James I right here in 1603.

Hampton Court Palace holds the unique distinction of being the birthplace of the Church of England. This occurred when Henry VIII bravely broke from the Roman Catholic church after the Pope declined to annul his marriage with Catherine of Aragon, enabling him to marry Anne Boleyn.

The only one of Henry’s queens to have a funeral, Jane Seymour’s lungs and heart are stored in a lead box behind the altar at the chapel at Hampton Court Palace.

The gardens and the palace have been the backdrop for countless movies and TV shows, including 'Bridgerton', 'Queen Charlotte', 'Sherlock Holmes', 'Pirates of the Caribbean', 'Mamma Mia', 'The Theory of Everything', and 'Three Men in a Boat'.

Why visit Hampton Court Palace?

Rich in Tudor history

Although the Tudor dynasty only lasted 118 years, it is nonetheless important. You'll walk in the footsteps of Henry VIII and his six wives. Hampton Court, after all, is where Henry wooed and courted Anne Boleyn and where Catherine Howard was accused of adultery & placed under house arrest.

Baroque opulence

After Henry's reign, Hampton Court was rebuilt during the Glorious Revolution of 1688 by Willian III and Mary II, who wanted their own slice of French palace life. Think Versailles meets English style. The result? A stunning Baroque masterpiece with beautiful ceilings, built by Sir Christopher Wren.

Chapel Royal

Chapel Royal is so stunning; it could rival the likes of St Paul's Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey. It has been used for worship for nearly 500 years, although Queen Anne refurbished it in the 1700s. The ceiling? A masterpiece of blue and gold, painted by Sir James Thornhill. The intricate oak detailing was carved by Grinling Gibbons.

One of its kind

The Hampton Court Palace is also home to The Maze, Britain’s oldest surviving hedge maze; the Great Vine, the largest grapevine in the world; the Chocolate Kitchen, the only surviving royal chocolate kitchen; the oldest Tudor kitchens; and the first-ever tennis courts. It’s also one of the two palaces where Henry VIII ever lived.

We traveled from London by train without any problems and had no trouble getting to the palace. We toured its rooms and gardens—it’s simply wonderful; you can really feel the history there. For me, it was a thrilling experience; I’d wanted to visit for a long time. I loved it. The gardens are wonderful. The staff were charming, friendly, and always willing to help.

The Beefeater that gave the tour of the London Tower was hilarious. It was a very informative afternoon and the ticket purchased through headout was a good price and the app easy to use. Thankfully, despite being 45 minutes late for my ticket time because of how long the Big Bus took in traffic, I was still able to enter the museum.
