Pro tips to help you make a pick

Duomo queues can stretch 1-2 hours during peak times, but pre-booking your tickets lets you bypass the ticket line. For zero hassle, opt for hosted entry—no waiting to redeem tickets, though security checks still apply.

Each Duomo complex site has its own schedule, so pick your entry slot based on what you want to explore. Allocate 1.5-2 hours for the cathedral complex, and add another hour if climbing the Dome or Bell Tower is on your list.

A guided tour of Florence Cathedral unlocks its rich history, stunning architecture, and religious significance, complete with priority access. Dome or tower climbs are typically unaccompanied, so consider an audio guide if you prefer exploring at your own pace.

On the left side of the Duomo's façade, near the Porta della Mandorla, you'll find the whispering arch. Stand under the arch and whisper against the wall, and your words can be heard clearly on the opposite side. This acoustic phenomenon is due to the shape of the arch and the materials used in its construction.

Early morning or VIP tours offer a quieter Duomo experience, often including exclusive spots like the Secret Terraces. Smaller groups of 10 or fewer make it easier to engage with the guide and connect with fellow travelers.

Brunelleschi’s Dome and Giotto’s Bell Tower offer breathtaking views—but it’s a 463- and 414-step climb with no elevator. It’s worth the effort, but these tickets are in high demand, so book ahead!

Did you know?

Test out the acoustic wonder of the Duomo's Whispering Gallery. Stand in one corner and whisper a secret to someone on the opposite side, and hear it perfectly transmitted through the curved space—a fascinating auditory phenomenon.

The cathedral's exterior was not originally pink and white. The Duomo's exterior was originally covered in a smooth, white marble façade, but over time, the marble began to weather and turn pink.

While the construction of Brunelleschi's dome is well-documented, the original model or plans for the dome's construction have never been found. Brunelleschi took this secret to his grave, leaving behind an architectural mystery.

Beneath the dome, there are hidden frescoes painted by Federico Zuccari. They depict scenes from Dante's "Divine Comedy" and are not visible from the cathedral's floor.

Look closely at the cathedral's marble exterior, and you'll find medallions with the faces of the builders and craftsmen who contributed to its construction. These subtle tributes pay homage to the skilled artisans of the time.

Why visit Duomo Florence?

Brunelleschi's dome

Be awed by the genius of Brunelleschi's dome, the largest masonry dome in the world. Challenge yourself to climb to the top for sweeping views of Florence while standing tall on an engineering marvel that has stood the test of time.

Hidden crypt

Explore the lesser-known crypt beneath the Duomo, where ancient relics and artifacts are housed. Rediscover the secrets of Florence's religious history in this subterranean treasure trove.

The Baptistry Doors

Don’t miss the breathtaking beauty of Ghiberti's golden doors, known as the "Gates of Paradise" which have intricately created biblical stories depicted on them.

The Last Judgment fresco

Marvel at the dramatic Last Judgment fresco by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari, covering the interior of the dome. The vivid colors, life-like detailing and sheer magnificence will have you in awe.

Rare sundial

Check out the sundial designed by Florentine mathematician Paolo da Pozzo Toscanelli. The rare sundial on the exterior of the Duomo tells time not in hours but in Italian hours. It not only tells the time but also displays the date, phase of the moon, and positions of the planets.

Fascinating fresco details

While admiring the famous frescoes, take a closer look at the intricate background details and hidden symbols that art historians have been unraveling for centuries. Duomo Florence is not just about the main attractions; it's a treasure trove of art, history, and mystery waiting to be discovered.

A unique experience. They changed our entry time to the Galleries, but we had a great time. The second floor, where the most famous paintings are, was a bit more crowded, but you could still view them in detail.
