Pro tips to help you make a pick

Wear comfortable shoes, expect plenty of walking and some steep, uneven paths in the gardens and palace.

Consider adding an audio guide for richer context, especially as many art labels are in Italian only.

Bring water and sun protection; shade and seating are limited in the gardens, especially during summer.

If you have mobility concerns, note that the palace has many stairs and the gardens are mostly unpaved and hilly.

Plan breaks in quieter garden corners or at the Porcelain Museum terrace for a restful pause and great views.

Did you know?

The Boboli Gardens’ design became a model for royal gardens across Europe, inspiring places like Versailles.

The palace houses the world’s largest collection of paintings displayed in their original aristocratic setting, not a modern museum layout.

The Buontalenti Grotto is one of the earliest artificial grottos in garden history, featuring Mannerist sculptures and faux stalactites.

An Egyptian obelisk, brought from Rome, stands at the center of the Boboli Amphitheater—a symbol of Medici power and taste.

The Porcelain Museum, located in the Knight’s Garden, showcases rare ceramics from Medici and European royal collections.

Why visit Palazzo Pitti?

Plan your visit

Pitti Palace Main Entrance (Piazza de' Pitti)

Located at the center of the palace’s grand facade on Piazza de' Pitti, this is the primary entrance for all Pitti Palace museums, including the Palatine Gallery, Royal Apartments, and Treasury of the Grand Dukes. The entrance is step-free and accessible for wheelchair users, with ramps and an elevator available to reach the main galleries. Ticket offices and security checks are located just inside the archway.

Boboli Gardens Courtyard Entrance

Accessed from inside the Pitti Palace, this entrance leads directly into the Boboli Gardens. It is located at the rear of the palace, through the internal courtyard. This entrance is convenient for visitors touring the palace first and then heading into the gardens. Please note that the initial garden paths are gravel and can be steep; only the lower sections are suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

Porta Romana Entrance (Boboli Gardens South Gate)

Situated at the southern end of the Boboli Gardens on Piazzale di Porta Romana, this entrance is ideal for those visiting the gardens only or arriving from the Oltrarno district. It is clearly signposted and has a ticket booth. The terrain here is hilly and mostly unpaved, so accessibility is limited for wheelchairs and those with mobility challenges.

Annunziata Gate (Bardini Garden Access)

This secondary entrance connects the Boboli Gardens to the adjacent Bardini Garden, included with your combined ticket. It is located on the eastern side of Boboli, near the Porcelain Museum. The path between gardens is uphill and may be challenging for those with limited mobility.

It was very easy to get in with the electronic ticket. The audio guide’s explanations were very thorough and easy to understand. The palace is very large, and sometimes it’s hard to tell which way to go based on the audio guide’s instructions. I wasn’t able to enter the royal apartments because, even though admission was free, I had to pick up another ticket, and that hadn’t been made clear beforehand. Otherwise, everything was perfect. Highly recommended!

We went early; there weren't many tourists, so we were able to take our time admiring all the paintings and the palace's beautiful rooms. We weren't able to get into the gardens because the entrances were under maintenance.

The Palace was great, but the gardens were under renovation. Also, the audio guide only covers the Palatine Gallery; it would be great if it covered everything you can see. Even so, I highly recommend it.

The tours of the Uffizi Gallery and the Pitti Palace were fantastic. However, at the time of our visit, the Boboli Gardens were of no interest at all due to the drought and ongoing construction; it was extremely hot, and none of the fountains were running... Too bad.
