Pro tips to help you make a pick

Pre-book a timed guided tour, especially in high season or on weekends. The main benefit is securing a slot; there is no documented large skip-the-line security queue.

Check the tour language before paying. English availability varies by time slot and season, and some departures may run mainly in Italian.

Do not expect audio guides or self-guided entry. Access to the Catacombs of San Gaudioso is by live guided tour only.

Compare the standard tour with the combined San Gaudioso + San Gennaro ticket. The combo usually gives better value per site, but only if you will visit both catacombs within the validity window.

Plan about 1–1.5 hours total for a standard visit, including check-in and group assembly, even though the guided route itself is usually about 45–60 minutes.

Arrive 10–15 minutes early at Basilica di Santa Maria della Sanità. Tickets are checked inside the basilica complex before the group descends.

If Headout shows Artecard Campania or Artecard Napoli variants, verify the exact inclusions and slot rules before choosing them instead of the standard guided-tour ticket.

Avoid booking another timed attraction immediately after this one. Reviews note that tours can start a little later than listed while the group assembles.

If stairs or confined spaces are a concern, read the access notes before booking. The route includes staircases, low ceilings, uneven floors, and narrow passages.

Wear closed shoes and bring a light layer, even in summer. The catacombs are cool and slightly damp, and the floors can be uneven.

About Catacombs of San Gaudioso

Guided entry only makes the Catacombs of San Gaudioso a structured underground visit beneath an active Baroque basilica. The route combines the tomb of Saint Gaudiosus, early Christian burial galleries, and 17th-century skull-and-shoulders wall tombs in about 45–60 minutes. Tours are run by La Paranza, linking the site to conservation and community work in the Sanità neighborhood.

Did you know?

The site grew around the tomb of Saint Gaudiosus, a 5th-century African bishop exiled to Naples, whose burial turned the area into a Christian cemetery and pilgrimage site.

In the 17th century, Neapolitan aristocrats used a "decollation" burial practice here: real skulls were placed in the walls and painted bodies were added below.

Some paintings above burials show the deceased's profession or social role, giving the catacombs an unusual visual record of early Neapolitan society.

The catacombs lie directly under Basilica di Santa Maria della Sanità, a Baroque church built partly to monumentalize the earlier Christian cemetery.

Ticket revenue helps fund catacomb conservation and community projects in the Sanità neighborhood through the La Paranza cooperative.

Why visit Catacombs of San Gaudioso?

The 5th-Century Tomb of Saint Gaudiosus

The catacombs developed around the burial of Saint Gaudiosus, a 5th-century African bishop exiled to Naples. His tomb turned the site into a Christian pilgrimage and cemetery, and the fresco decoration emphasizes his episcopal status and Naples' link with North African Christianity.

17th-Century Wall Tombs with Real Skulls

The later burial zone shows the Baroque "decollation" practice used for aristocratic burials. Real skulls were set into the walls and painted bodies were added below, creating tombs that also signaled the deceased's social identity.

Early Christian Loculi Corridors and Symbols

Main galleries preserve rows of horizontal burial niches that show the communal system used for ordinary believers. Some loculi still retain faint symbols such as anchors or fish, motifs associated with early Christian funerary imagery.

Frescoed Arcosolia and Profession Paintings

Side chambers contain arched tombs with frescoed portraits, including figures shown in orant prayer pose. Some paintings above burials include tools or gestures linked to the deceased's work, offering a visual record of early Neapolitan society.

Underground Basilica Beneath Santa Maria della Sanità

The route includes a chamber adapted for Christian worship, showing that the catacombs were not only burial spaces. Guides point out evidence of past altars and processional routes, while the descent from the basilica above makes the layering of church and cemetery clear.

The Catacombs was a cool retreat from the heat above, and the guide was very knowledgeable. I was astounded to learn of the three different ways to be buried, and it was a nice surprise to be able to visit for free the other catacombs in Naples at a later time!

An amazing place. The catacombs are vast and well-preserved. The foundation that restored them and organizes the tours is doing a wonderful job in the Sanita neighborhood. The guides are very professional and attentive. And they’re volunteers for the foundation! Congratulations.

They're completely different from the catacombs in Rome. Much more beautiful. The fact that it's run by a cooperative really adds to how well-organized and clean everything is, and how great the guides are.
