Pro tips to help you make a pick

Morning time slots are usually quieter, giving you more space for photos and easier movement through viewing areas.

Late afternoon visits offer softer light over the River Mersey, which is better for skyline photos and river views.

Most tickets allow free cancellation up to a set time before your visit, so confirm the policy in case plans change.

Entry is timed, so arrive at least fifteen minutes early to allow for security checks and group organisation.

Comfortable shoes are recommended since tours include stairs and walking through multiple levels of the building.

About Royal Liver Building

The Royal Liver Building is a historic tower overlooking Liverpool’s waterfront, built when the city was a major global port. Its large clocks, river views, and Liver Bird statues make it easy to spot from afar. Today, visitors can step inside with entry tickets or pair the visit with a hop-on hop-off bus tour or Anfield Stadium tour through Headout.

Did you know?

The architect mixed the look of ancient Byzantine towers with early American skyscrapers, creating a style Britain had never seen on a building this tall.

Each Liver Bird weighs more than a bus, is packed with thousands of rivets, and is quietly chained down so city legends about them flying away never come true.

The clock faces are larger than Big Ben’s, but they stopped chiming decades ago so ships on the river would not mistake the sound for navigation signals.

In 1911, the building introduced some of Europe’s fastest lifts, using river water pressure to shoot people upward faster than most had ever experienced.

Inside each tower sits a sealed time capsule from the 1920s, filled with papers and coins, locked away and untouched since the day it was hidden.

Why visit Royal Liver Building?

Views across the city and river

Ride up to the viewing level and look out over Liverpool from all sides. You can see the River Mersey flowing below, ships moving through the docks, and the city stretching out to the horizon.

Face to face with the Liver Birds

Stand just steps away from the famous Liver Birds perched high above the city. These copper figures sit quietly on the towers, looking out over the river as they have for more than a century.

Inside the giant clock faces

Walk behind the huge clock faces and see the city through their glass panels. Lights and sound bring the space to life while explaining how these clocks have kept time for Liverpool for generations.

Hands on displays and screens

Inside the visitor areas, screens, models, and displays explain how the building was constructed and why the Liver Birds matter so much to the city.

A place for unforgettable photos

From river views to city rooftops, every angle offers a photo worth keeping. Step outside and you are moments from the Pier Head, with open space, statues, and water all around you.

Plan your visit

Main entrance

The main entrance sits at Pier Head, opening into a bright atrium where tickets are checked and tours begin, with staff guiding visitors toward galleries, lifts, and the start of the building experience.
