Constable’s Gate

Built in the early 13th century, Constable’s Gate served as Dover Castle’s grand ceremonial entrance and defensive gateway. Its massive multi-tower design reflects the castle’s importance as one of England’s strongest medieval fortresses.

King’s Gate

Positioned on the northern side of the castle, King’s Gate once formed a heavily fortified medieval entrance into the outer defences. It played a significant role during the 1216 siege led by Louis of France.

Colton’s Gate

Colton’s Gate provided controlled access into the outer bailey section of Dover Castle, helping strengthen the layered defensive layout. Today, it remains an important architectural reminder of the fortress’s carefully planned medieval security system.

Palace Gate

Protected by a portcullis and drawbridge, Palace Gate guarded entry into the inner bailey and the Great Tower complex. This heavily defended gateway once controlled access to the castle’s most important royal and military spaces.
