About Château de Fontainebleau

Eight centuries of continuous royal use make the Palace of Fontainebleau unusually layered among French palaces. Instead of a single stylistic moment, the route moves from medieval origins to François I’s Renaissance galleries and Napoleon’s furnished rooms. The Chinese Museum, Pope’s Apartment, and gardens add collections and spaces that broaden the visit beyond formal state rooms.

Did you know?

The château has around 1,500 rooms, but only a fraction are open to visitors, which is why even the main route can take longer than many people expect.

Why visit Château de Fontainebleau?

Eight Centuries of Royal Life in One Visit

Fontainebleau was a royal residence from the 12th century to Napoleon III, giving the palace a timeline that runs from medieval foundations to Empire interiors. The main route brings together ceremonial halls, chapels, and furnished apartments used by generations of French rulers.

Plan your visit

Main Entrance - Cour d’Honneur / Horseshoe Staircase gate

Use the main gate from Place Charles de Gaulle into the Cour d’Honneur; the Horseshoe Staircase is straight ahead and is the easiest landmark to follow. This is the entrance for standard visitors, whether you already have a ticket or need to collect or buy one. Ticket control takes place at the château museum entrance inside the courtyard before the interior route, and all visitors pass through bag and security screening. Advance e-tickets can help you avoid the ticket-purchase line but not security. The courtyard is cobbled, so wheelchair access is possible but can feel bumpy, and some interior areas still depend on lifts or ramps. Expect some clustering at security in peak periods.

Garden and Park Side Pedestrian Accesses

These gates connect the formal gardens and park with the palace grounds and are most useful if you are already walking in the outdoor areas. They are not the primary museum entrance and are generally not where visitors first have tickets scanned for the interior route. Waits are usually minimal because they are mainly for circulation rather than ticketing. Paths are generally level, but surfaces can vary between gravel and grass, so they are better for ground access than for fast museum entry.
