You walk through the first "gate" and wow! You step into a medieval town. We walk through the town along the marked path and head to the entrance of the castle and its ramparts. It’s just like in the movies! Fantastic. As for the ramparts, there are a lot of steps, but it’s worth it. We spent three hours on this unforgettable tour.

It's a dreamlike place, frozen in time. You feel as if you've stepped back into the Middle Ages. The ramparts offer a 360-degree view of the surroundings. And everything is very well preserved. It's the largest medieval castle I've ever visited.

The entire castle and the fortress walls are amazing and well worth a visit. The visual presentation on the first floor was especially beautiful and fascinating. We’ve never seen anything like it, and we travel all over the world.

The castle is absolutely beautiful, and the videos and exhibits are excellent and interesting. One area for improvement is that the restrooms on the premises were very dirty; since they are the only ones available, it is necessary to improve both the cleanliness and the facilities.

  • Skip the lines to the castle and ramparts and discover their medieval wonders on a full-day trip from Toulouse.

    Getting started

Begin your journey at Toulouse, where you’ll board a comfortable bus for Carcassonne. Upon arrival, present your ticket at the Château Comtal entrance for fast-track access. Multilingual leaflets are available at the castle, and audio guides can be picked up for your self-guided exploration.

    What to expect

Enjoy hassle-free travel from Toulouse and skip the line access to Carcassonne’s iconic castle and ramparts. Once inside the city, you can explore at your own pace with the audio guide (English, French, and Spanish) and leaflet. Hear stories of crusaders, sieges, and medieval life in the city as you wander through its cobbled lanes. Climb ancient towers and enjoy sweeping countryside views from the ramparts without fixed schedules or group constraints.

    Features:

    • Château Comtal: Explore the Count’s Castle, the heart of the citadel, and walk through its courtyards, archaeological museum, and ramparts—restored in the 19th century to preserve its medieval grandeur.

    • Fortified walls & watchtowers: Stroll along the massive ramparts and climb the towers for sweeping views over the city and countryside, retracing the footsteps of Romans, Visigoths, and Crusaders.

    • The great well: Visit this essential medieval feature, once a lifeline for the fortress during sieges.

    • Saint Nazaire Basilica: Admire the basilica’s intricate stonework and stained glass, a Gothic masterpiece within the citadel.

    • City walls walk: Take in panoramic views as you circle the city’s defensive barriers, with plenty of free time to wander cobblestone streets and charming squares.
