Verified booking3 days ago5/5We purchased tickets in advance through Get Your Guide as linked through their website. When we arrived we found out there was only going to be 4 of us there that day and 2 of us were invited to try the sumo training and "fight" the wrestlers (who are retired sumo). They were all fantastic showmen and gave us an incredible and educational experience where we could not stop laughing. The next day I am sore and used muscles I had forgotten existed from getting in the ring with these guys. Highly recommend for the extensive interaction with the wrestlers that was above and beyond the "dinner theater" experience most places seemed to offer.PPeter K
Verified booking3 days ago5/5Even after Disneyland this was the highlight of my trip so far. The host/emcee was very hospitable, informative and funny. A bit of a history lesson to start then a segue into the exercises demonstrated by two retired sumo wrestlers (stll big and strong). A few funny "matches" then a real match. These are like crashing cars and only a few feet from us! We got our turn and that was insanely fun. We, my son and daughter in law, all put on the traditional mawashi (over provided clothing) and went at it. My heartrate was through the roof with excitement and effort. Do not miss this!MMatthew K
Verified booking3 days ago5/5Incredible experience. A must-do! Seeing two sumo wrestle this close and personal is a sight to be seen. Amazing athletes. The wrestlers were charismatic, skilled and informative. The in-ring experience is unbelievable. You do the training exercises with the wrestlers, and even get to have a sumo match! Very accommodating, family friendly! A family of 6, and we all had an amazing time. Highly recommend.MMiles K
Verified booking3 days ago5/5I came to the sumo show with my brother. The team was very knowledgeable and even more friendly. Learning about the history of sumo and its connection to the modern sport was incredible. The highlight was getting into the ring ourselves to practice some of the techniques we had seen firsthand. I recommend every come to learn and experience sumo for themselvesYYasunori T
Verified booking3 days ago5/5If you join the Sunamachi Ginza Sumo Stable Tour, be sure to step into the ring and challenge a real sumo wrestler! It was my very first time trying sumo, and it was an unforgettable experience. The power and intensity are absolutely incredible! No matter how hard you charge, the wrestler won't even budge. Go aheadgive it everything you've got!
Discover a different side of Tokyo with an authentic sumo experience that combines a nostalgic local shopping street, a live sumo performance, and the rare opportunity to wear a real mawashi and step onto a traditional clay ring.
Getting started
Make your way to the sumo venue near Sunamachi Ginza, one of Tokyo's longest-running shopping streets in Koto City. Plan to arrive 30–45 minutes before your scheduled session to stroll through the lively market, where you'll find local favorites like yakitori, croquettes, and traditional Japanese sweets. Pick up any snacks or drinks you'd like to enjoy during the show before heading into the venue and checking in.
What to expect
-
Your experience begins inside an authentic sumo venue centered around a traditional clay dohyo (sumo ring). As you settle in with your refreshments, watch former professional sumo wrestlers perform ceremonial rituals, demonstrate classic techniques, and compete in exciting live bouts while learning about the history and traditions of Japan's national sport.
-
Once the demonstrations conclude, it's time to become part of the action. Change into the provided T-shirt and shorts before staff help you wear an authentic mawashi, the traditional sumo belt worn by wrestlers. Step barefoot onto the sacred clay ring and enjoy a fun, beginner-friendly sparring session with a former professional wrestler in a safe and supervised environment.
-
The experience ends with an opportunity to meet the wrestlers, ask questions, and capture memorable photos together on the dohyo. If you've selected the ticket option with local street food, you'll also enjoy authentic flavors from Sunamachi Ginza as part of your cultural experience.
