Pro tips to help you make a pick

To avoid the largest crowds, it's best to plan your visit for a time when there are no major holidays.

Purchasing tickets online can save you the hassle of waiting in long lines to enter the museum.

If you want to skip the line and gain a deeper appreciation for the art with historical context, consider going on a guided tour.

Before your visit, download the Rijksmuseum's official app. It includes detailed maps and artwork information, enhancing your museum experience.

Photography is allowed, but flash, tripods, and selfie sticks are prohibited. Be mindful of other visitors when taking photos.

Don't miss the Cuypers Library within the museum. It's a stunning space and a quiet spot to take a break from the main galleries.

Did you know?

The museum's most famous painting is Rembrandt's "Night Watch," which is not actually a night scene as the name suggests. It was covered in a dark varnish for years, leading to the misconception.

The Rijksmuseum is the only museum in the world with a road running through it. Initially car-accessible until 1931, it now exclusively welcomes cyclists and pedestrians, preserving the museum's integrity and exhibits.

The Rijksmuseum's gardens feature special beehives as part of an initiative to promote biodiversity and sustainability, reflecting the museum's commitment to environmental stewardship.

During the 2013 renovation, many original features of the building, hidden or altered in previous renovations, were restored, including stunning stained-glass windows and intricate mosaic floors.

Artwork isn't just confined to the galleries; the Rijksmuseum features art in unexpected places, including beautiful tile tableaus in the café and historically inspired murals in restrooms.

Why visit Rijksmuseum?

Dutch masterpieces

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is celebrated for its extraordinary collection of works from the Dutch Golden Age, a period in the 17th century when Dutch art, science, trade, and military power were among the most acclaimed in the world. It includes works from renowned personalities like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals.

Broad spectrum of art forms

The museum extends far beyond its renowned collection of paintings, offering a diverse and comprehensive exploration of various art forms that illustrate the rich tapestry of Dutch art and culture. These include sculptures, decorative arts, prints, drawings, and photographs.

Architectural brilliance

The Rijksmuseum building in Amsterdam is not just a housing for art; it is a masterpiece of architectural design in its own right. Designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, the building is a striking example of the Dutch Neo-Renaissance style, which blends Gothic and Renaissance architecture elements.

Diverse historical artifacts

You will find a rich tapestry of Dutch heritage, featuring medieval armor, exquisite Delftware, intricate ship models, and detailed dollhouses at the Rijksmuseum. Its collection also includes historical clothing, textiles, and elegant furniture like carved cabinets, delicate glassware, and ornate clocks.

The Rijksmuseum Library

The museum's library is one of the largest art history libraries in the Netherlands, and is an invaluable resource for researchers and art aficionados. Housing an extensive collection of books, manuscripts, and periodicals, it offers deep insights into art history and conservation.

The 3-Day GVB Pass was a fantastic choice for our trip to Amsterdam! For 72 hours, we had completely unlimited access to all public transportation in the city—whether tram, metro, or bus. The best part was the sheer spontaneity: you don’t have to worry at all about individual tickets or fare zones. After long walks along the canals, we could just hop on the nearest tram, quickly scan our ticket, and continue our journey stress-free. The process was absolutely hassle-free, and the trams were extremely punctual and clean. For anyone who wants to explore Amsterdam flexibly, stress-free, and without having to walk long distances, this pass is an absolute must-have. We’d definitely book it again for our next city trip!

Visiting both WONDR Experience and Fabrique des Lumières was definitely one of the biggest highlights of our trip to Amsterdam! Both places exceeded our expectations. WONDR Experience was incredibly fun, playful, and visually stunning, while Fabrique des Lumières offered a completely mesmerizing, immersive art experience. We spent so much time taking everything in and enjoyed every single second. If we had stayed in Amsterdam longer, we would have gladly visited both all over again. Highly recommend to everyone!
