About Nikko Toshogu

Thick lacquer, gold leaf, and Momoyama-style ornamentation make Nikko Toshogu stand apart from the plainer wood finish seen at many Japanese shrines. It is also a mausoleum, not just a worship site: Tokugawa Ieyasu is enshrined here, and visitors move from richly carved lower courtyards to the quieter Okusha path under centuries-old cedars.

The current Toshogu complex was largely rebuilt in the 1630s by Tokugawa Iemitsu, Tokugawa Ieyasu's grandson, replacing a simpler earlier mausoleum shrine.

The Three Wise Monkeys are only one panel on the Sacred Stable; the monkey carvings together form a broader life-stage narrative.

The Sleeping Cat carving is attributed to Hidari Jingoro, and sparrows are carved on the reverse side to suggest harmony.
