Did you know?

The decorations and paintings within the castle illustrate the ideals and longings of King Ludwig II.

The grand palace was not designed for royal representation but as a place of retreat for King Ludwig from the public eyes.

Behind the medieval appearance of the castle, the latest technology was in operation - hot air central heating, electric bell system, automatic flushing system in the toilets, running water on every floor, lift system to transport meals from the kitchen to the king, and telephones in the third and fourth floors.

Proposed to finish construction in three years, the construction of Neuschwanstein Castle took two decades.

The castle was built by King Ludwig as an ode to his favorite music composer, Richard Wagner. Within the castle are many odes to the composer, from the Singers Hall to the Grotto, an artificial cave inspired by one of his operas.

Why visit Neuschwanstein Castle?

Architectural marvel

Neuschwanstein Castle is an idealized version of a medieval castle which incorporates Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine styles of architecture. Unlike most castles designed for a defensive purpose, this one leaned more towards aesthetics.

Majestic interiors

The interiors of the Neuschwanstein Castle is a tribute in stone and art to the world of Richard Wagner’s operas. The pictures that adorn the walls of the castle represent love, guilt, repentance, and salvation and are modeled after medieval legends that the composer had based his musical works on.

Rich history

The history behind the construction of the Neuschwanstein Castle is one of tragedy, where a young prince with a passion for music, art, and architecture ascended the throne as a teenager and ruled as a recluse until his untimely death at the age of 41. In an attempt to decorate the cultural landscape of Bavaria, King Ludwig II commissioned the construction of this fairy-tale castle.

Panoramic views

Built atop a hill, the views from and towards Neuschwanstein Castle are breathtaking. Popularly, there are 5 viewpoints of the castle - Marienbrücke, Tegelberg, Tegelberg ski slope, Reith Alpe, and Schwangau – Landstraße. These vantage points allow you to view the Neuschwanstein Castle from different angles and capture some beautiful shots.

Simple and straightforward thanks to the digital ticket. The hardest part of the tour was the walk from the parking lot up to the castle. Otherwise, everything was great. Many thanks to the staff, and see you again soon! Next time, I'll come with my family in spring or summer when it's not snowing and we can enjoy the surroundings (mountain landscape and view) much more!
