Pro tips to help you make a pick

If you're planning to visit during July, August, or the Christmas holidays, it's recommended to book your tickets online a few days ahead to avoid long queues, especially between 10am and 1pm.

Wednesdays are ideal for those who prefer a slower pace or are late risers, as the museum remains open until 7:30pm and the crowds tend to ease off after 5pm.

Your standard ticket grants access to all permanent and temporary exhibits. If you’re interested in in-depth knowledge or wish to visit restricted areas like the rooftop, consider opting for a guided tour.

Most Vienna City Passes and sightseeing cards offer entry to the Natural History Museum, but double-check your voucher to ensure it covers admission.

If you plan on visiting other attractions nearby, consider purchasing a combo ticket for the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Natural History Museum Vienna. This bundle often offers a discounted price.

The museum is partially accessible for wheelchair users, with elevators to most exhibition halls and spacious, level galleries. However, certain areas, like the rooftop, are not accessible due to stair-only access.

Did you know?

Home to over 30 million species: The museum boasts one of the largest collections of natural history in the world, spanning everything from dinosaurs and minerals to meteoritic specimens that are billions of years old.

The oldest known prehistoric sculpture: The Venus of Willendorf, a 29,500-year-old figurine, is one of the world’s most important archaeological finds and a standout in the museum’s extensive collection of prehistoric artifacts.

A meteorite collection like no other: The museum houses the world’s largest public meteorite display, featuring over 1,100 specimens, including the famous Hraschina meteorite, which played a key role in proving that meteorites come from space.

Underground preservation during World War II: During World War II, the museum’s priceless collections were safely stored in underground bunkers to protect them from bombing, ensuring that much of its heritage was preserved for future generations.

A museum built for the people: Although the collections were originally imperial, Empress Maria Theresa made them publicly accessible in the 18th century, establishing the museum as one of Europe’s first publicly accessible scientific institutions.

Plan your visit

Main entrance (Maria-Theresien-Platz)

The main entrance, located on the museum’s striking grand façade, is the primary access point for most visitors. It features large swinging doors and is suitable for prams and wheeled luggage, though there are a few steps at the entrance. Expect higher visitor traffic, especially between 10:30am and 1pm, making it a busier entry point during peak hours.

Side entrance (Burgring 7)

The side entrance along Burgring Street is a step-free access point, featuring a ramp and automatic doors for easy entry. It provides direct elevator access to all exhibition levels and is the museum's official wheelchair-accessible entrance. This entrance is generally quieter, making it a great option to avoid crowds, particularly during busy times.

I visited the museum during the week, and entry was hassle-free with tickets purchased through Headout. The tour takes a few hours, and there are rooms divided into different periods where you can learn many interesting things. There is also a restaurant in the museum where you can satisfy your hunger after the tour. For children, there are also interactive exhibit elements. Everyone will find something for themselves—there are rooms dedicated to minerals, dinosaurs, human ancestors, and ancient animals, as well as modern ones: mammals, fish, insects, amphibians, and reptiles. The museum itself is highly impressive as it is decorated with numerous paintings. It is well worth a visit.

Basically, I recommend the Vienna Card, but it is misleading that I can cancel booked events with the provider, but cannot book a replacement on Headout. This means instead of 7 events, I would only have 6. Additionally, one booked event simply disappeared from Headout and the provider, which is even more annoying!!!! So I could only enjoy 5 of the 7 included events of the Vienna Card. Sad!
