Pro tips to help you make a pick

Book a time-stamped ticket online where possible, especially during busy periods. This helps reduce uncertainty around entry and ticket availability.

Most tickets include access to the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, subject to availability. Check your voucher and the museum schedule before visiting.

Choose an audio guide if you want more context without joining a live guided tour. This works well for visitors who prefer exploring independently.

Choose a guided tour if you want Monet’s Water Lilies and the Walter-Guillaume collection explained in person by an expert.

Pick an Orsay-Orangerie combo if you want a fuller Impressionist art route across two major Paris museums.

About Musée de l'Orangerie

Visit Musée de l’Orangerie to see Monet’s Water Lilies in the museum’s immersive oval rooms, then continue into the Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume collection. The museum brings together major Impressionist and modern works in a compact setting, making it one of the easiest Paris art museums to explore in 1–2 hours.

Did you know?

The Orangerie building was constructed in 1852 to shelter the orange trees of the Tuileries Garden during winter.

Monet offered the Water Lilies cycle to the French State after the Armistice of November 11, 1918, as a symbol of peace.

The Water Lilies rooms opened to the public in 1927, a few months after Monet’s death.

The Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume collection contains 148 works dating from the 1860s to the 1930s.

The museum’s Water Lilies are displayed in two oval rooms, creating a continuous panoramic viewing experience around the visitor.

Why visit Musée de l'Orangerie?

Monet’s Water Lilies

See Monet’s Water Lilies in two oval rooms designed to surround visitors with the paintings. The installation is the museum’s defining experience and one of the most famous Monet displays in Paris.

Walter-Guillaume collection

Go beyond Monet with the Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume collection, which brings together major works by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani, Rousseau, Utrillo, and Soutine.

Compact museum experience

The Orangerie is easier to pace than Paris’ larger museums. It works well for visitors who want a focused art visit without committing half a day.

Central Tuileries location

The museum sits in the Jardin des Tuileries near Place de la Concorde, making it easy to pair with the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, the Seine, or a walk through central Paris.

Easy Orsay pairing

Musée d’Orsay and Musée de l’Orangerie work well together for an Impressionist art route. Choose this pairing if you want to follow Monet and other major Impressionist works across two closely linked Paris museums.

The part of the tour along the Canal Saint-Martin was particularly impressive and beautiful, as we passed through six locks. In addition, clear explanations were provided in both French and English. My 14-year-old granddaughter also thought it was a highlight of our trip to Paris. Truly a unique experience!
