Pro tips to help you make a pick

Choose the Unlimited Rides Pass only if each rider plans several attractions or a 2–4 hour stay. If your group is mostly watching, supervising younger kids, or only trying 1–3 rides, entry plus pay-per-ride tickets is usually the smarter structure.

On weekends and Victorian school holidays, buy online in advance if you can. Online dated or off-peak Unlimited Rides offers can be cheaper than gate purchase and let you skip the separate ticket-buying queue, though not security or ride lines.

Pre-booking does not include ride priority. Everyone still queues for bag checks at the entrance and for individual rides, so arrive near opening and head first to Scenic Railway and Ghost Train if they are your priorities.

Check the official calendar before booking. Luna Park operates year-round on selected days, typically weekends and Victorian school holidays, with extra dates in peak periods rather than a fixed daily schedule.

Check ride status on the day, especially Scenic Railway. Weather and maintenance can close headline rides even while the park stays open, which matters if you are choosing an Unlimited Rides Pass mainly for the park’s heritage coaster.

Review the ride height guide before you buy passes for children. Some rides require minimum heights or an accompanying adult, so families with toddlers may get better value from selective ride tickets than all-day unlimited access.

Standard tickets are self-guided. Expect QR-code scanning at the turnstiles and a wristband or equivalent for Unlimited Rides, but no host, guided tour, or bundled extras such as games, food, drinks, or paid photos.

If you are booking for a birthday or larger group, compare group or party packages with individual passes. These can bundle entry, ride access, reserved areas, and catering, which is more convenient than purchasing everyone separately.

About Luna Park Melbourne

Luna Park Melbourne is a compact seaside park where heritage matters as much as thrill level. Instead of a sprawling resort layout, it wraps rides around the Scenic Railway loop and pairs classic attractions with St Kilda’s beachside setting. The manual-brake Scenic Railway, the Mr Moon entrance, and easy access to Acland Street give it a distinctly Melbourne identity.

Did you know?

Luna Park Melbourne opened in 1912, making it one of the world’s oldest operating amusement parks, according to Museums Victoria and the park’s official site.

The Scenic Railway still uses a standing brakeman to control speed manually, a rare operating detail for a roller coaster still in public use.

The main entrance is the giant Mr Moon face on The Esplanade, a façade that has greeted visitors since 1912 and appears regularly in Melbourne tourism imagery.

Unlike large destination parks, Luna Park is compact enough to walk end-to-end in a few minutes, which helps families cover the whole site quickly.

High winds and heavy rain can close rides such as the Scenic Railway even when the park itself remains open, because many attractions are fully exposed to bay weather.

Why visit Luna Park Melbourne?

Ride the Scenic Railway with Bay Views

The Scenic Railway is a heritage wooden roller coaster that circles the park boundary, so the ride doubles as a lap above the midway. Museums Victoria says it is often cited as the oldest continually operating wooden roller coaster in the world, and it still uses a standing brakeman to control speed manually.

Enter Through the 1912 Mr Moon Face

The giant smiling Mr Moon face is more than an entrance photo stop. According to Museums Victoria and the park, this façade has welcomed visitors since 1912 and remains one of Melbourne’s best-known amusement park images.

Mix Carousel, Dodgems, and Thrill Rides

Luna Park’s lineup covers gentle and higher-intensity options in a small footprint. Families can rotate between the carousel, dodgems, Ferris wheel, and kids’ rides, while older kids and adults can add the Ghost Train, Scenic Railway, and changing spin or drop rides.

Pair the Park with St Kilda

The park sits directly opposite St Kilda Beach on The Esplanade, making it easy to combine rides with the foreshore. Acland Street’s cake shops are about 250–400 m away, and St Kilda Pier is about 800–900 m away for skyline views or a post-park walk.

See Luna Park After Dark

Evening openings change the look of the park as the façade and rides light up after dark. Selected dates also bring seasonal programming such as Halloween themes or school holiday activations, so a repeat visit can feel different from a daytime session.

Plan your visit

Main Entrance - Mr Moon Gate

Located on The Esplanade directly opposite St Kilda Beach, under the giant smiling Mr Moon face, this is the main entrance for all regular visitors. E-tickets and pre-purchased passes are scanned at the turnstiles just inside, and guests buying or changing tickets use the on-site counters here. Expect bag checks or visual inspections before entry. Queues are usually shorter on off-peak days and longer on weekends, school holidays, around opening, and in mid-afternoon. The approach is flat from street level, and the park's main paths are largely flat, though some rides require steps or transfers.

I visited SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium with my family, and it was our very first time there — and also our first time being together in Australia. It turned into such a special day for all of us. The exhibits were beautiful, the staff were friendly, and everything was easy to navigate as a family. The highlight for us was definitely the penguins. Watching them up close was magical and made the whole experience unforgettable. My family absolutely loved it, and it was the perfect way to celebrate being reunited. Highly recommend for families, first-time visitors, and anyone looking for a memorable day out in Melbourne.

My trip to Melbourne SEA LIFE was absolutely amazing and unforgettable. From the moment I walked inside, I felt like I had entered a whole new underwater world. The lighting, the calming sounds, and the huge tanks immediately captured my attention. I was fascinated by the incredible variety of sea creatures, from graceful jellyfish glowing softly to playful penguins waddling around with so much personality. Walking through the ocean tunnel was my favourite part, as sharks and massive rays glided right above my head, making it feel like I was underwater with them. The colourful coral displays and tropical fish were breathtaking and made me appreciate how beautiful and diverse marine life is. The interactive exhibits were fun and educational, helping me learn interesting facts while still enjoying myself. Overall, the experience was exciting, relaxing, and inspiring, and it made my visit to Melbourne even more special.
