Getting started

On Day 1, check in at 9am at the Dive Centre at 319 Draper Street, Cairns to meet your instructor, complete paperwork, and begin dive theory. On Day 2, you are picked up from your Cairns city accommodation at 9am. From Days 3 and 4, check in at Cairns Marlin Marina before boarding SeaQuest for your Outer Reef day trips.

What to expect

Dive Centre at 319 Draper Street, Cairns

Your first two days focus on theory and pool skills at the Dive Centre at 319 Draper Street, Cairns, where you learn the foundations of safe scuba diving in a controlled environment.

Features

Start Day 1 with dive theory sessions that cover the basics you need for the course, then move into the pool in the afternoon to begin scuba skills training and complete your 10-minute tread water test by around 5.30pm.

On Day 2, continue your pool skills in the morning, complete the 200m swim test, then put on your wetsuit and gear for more skills practice before reviewing your scuba theory and finishing with a multiple choice exam.

All PADI materials are provided for your theory and exam, so you can focus on learning without needing to purchase extra course books.

All dive and snorkel equipment, air fills and tuition are included during your pool and theory days, along with all applicable fees, taxes and levies, so there are no extra training charges at the Dive Centre.

SeaQuest and the Great Barrier Reef outer reef sites

Days 3 and 4 are spent on SeaQuest, heading from Cairns Marlin Marina to the Great Barrier Reef outer reef for your open water dives and snorkelling practice.

Each reef day starts with an 8am check in to board SeaQuest at Cairns Marlin Marina, followed by an 8.30am departure on a 90 minute cruise to the outer reef where you receive a dive briefing before gearing up for your first training dive.

Across the two Outer Reef day trips you complete 4 total open water training dives, refining the skills you learned in the pool and gaining real-world experience at the reef’s shallow cays and coral sites.

Between dives, there is time built in to practise your snorkelling skills at the reef’s beautiful shallow cays, giving you extra time in the water beyond your scuba sessions.

Fresh chilled water, tea and coffee are available on your reef days, and all dive and snorkel equipment, air fills and tuition are included on board.

Transfers from Cairns accommodation are provided on course days, and all applicable fees, taxes and levies are covered as part of your booking, so logistics and local charges are taken care of while you focus on qualifying.

What to bring

Swim ability: Be prepared to complete a 200m swim and a 10‑minute treading water test during the course.

Sun protection: Bring a hat, sunglasses, and reef‑safe sunscreen for the pool and reef days.

Swimwear: Pack a swimsuit for pool sessions and reef dives.

Towel: Bring your own towel for use after pool and open‑water sessions.

Lunch: Bring a packed lunch for Days 1 and 2 or plan to buy food nearby the dive centre.

Additional information

Minimum age: The minimum age to join this course is 10 years.

Under 12s: If a diver is under 12, a private instructor will be required.

Swim tests: You must pass a 200m swim and a 10‑minute treading water test to continue the course.

Medical questionnaire: All scuba participants must meet the medical questionnaire requirements before diving.

Medical conditions: Some conditions or medications may prevent you from diving, so review the Can I Dive? page before booking.

Medical certificate: A medical certificate may be required if you answer yes to any questions on the self‑assessed declaration form.

Flying after diving: After a single no‑decompression dive, you should not fly or go to altitude for at least 12 hours.

Multiple dives: After multiple dives per day for several days or decompression dives, you should not fly or go to altitude for at least 24 hours.

Altitude definition: Altitude is defined as over 300m or 1000ft above sea level, including trips to the Atherton Tablelands.

Day 1 check‑in: On Day 1, you check in at 9am at the dive centre at 319 Draper Street, Cairns.

Day 2 pickup: On Day 2, you are picked up from Cairns city accommodation at 9am.

Reef days check‑in: On Days 3 and 4, you check in and board SeaQuest at Cairns Marlin Marina at 8am.

Reef cruise time: The cruise to the outer reef takes about 90 minutes each morning.

Daily timings: Pool days finish at about 5.30pm and reef days return to Cairns at about 4.30pm.
