Trade Cairo traffic for Fayoum's open desert: dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, and Egypt's only natural waterfall, all in a single day trip.
Getting started
Your shared, air-conditioned transfer picks you up from your Cairo or Giza hotel at 7am. The 100-minute drive to Wadi El Rayan gives your multilingual guide time to brief you on the day. Skip the heavy breakfast — you'll thank yourself during dune bashing.
What to expect
First stop is Wadi El Rayan Waterfalls, Egypt's largest natural waterfall cutting unexpectedly through desert terrain. Keep an eye on the shoreline for slender-horned gazelles; sightings are occasional but real. From here, the group moves to Mudawara Mountain for a photo stop in front of its distinctive layered rock formation rising above the sand.
Then the desert opens up. Your 4x4 driver takes the dunes at speed — passengers hold on, no driving required. After dune bashing, you swap the vehicle for a sandboard and ride the same slopes on foot; guides help with posture and technique. A short camel ride follows before the group settles into a Bedouin camp for hot BBQ lunch and tea.
The convoy returns to Cairo by 5pm. Bring ~USD 5 in cash for the national park entry fee, paid at the gate.
Features
-
Egypt's only natural waterfall: Wadi El Rayan sits in the Fayoum Oasis — an unusual stop that most Cairo day trips don't include.
-
4x4 dune bashing: High-speed runs with an experienced local driver. No experience needed; not suitable for heart conditions or pregnancy.
-
Sandboarding for all levels: Guide-assisted boarding on live dunes, suitable from age 4. No prior experience required.
-
Camel ride included: A short desert ride genuinely in the price — not a paid add-on you'll be nudged into at the site.
-
Bedouin BBQ lunch: Hot grilled food and tea at a desert camp, included with every booking.
-
Multilingual guide: Available in English, Arabic, French, Spanish, German, or Italian.
-
Hotel pickup included: Shared transfers from Cairo and Giza. New Cairo, Heliopolis, Cairo Airport, and surrounding areas available at extra cost.
-
What to bring
-
USD 5 in cash per person: The Wadi El Rayan National Park entry fee is paid directly at the gate and is not included in your booking. The ticket counter does not accept cards; USD, EUR, and GBP are all accepted.
-
Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses: The waterfall and mountain photo stops involve extended time outdoors with no shade cover and intense desert UV. UV exposure at this latitude can cause sunburn in under 30 minutes.
-
Light, long-sleeved layers: Breathable cotton or linen protects against both sand and direct sun during the dune and sandboarding segments. Avoid dark colours — they absorb considerably more heat in open desert conditions.
-
Closed-toe shoes: Loose, uneven sand on the dune slope makes open sandals impractical for the sandboarding activity. Trainers or light hiking shoes work best.
-
Valid government-issued ID: Required for tour registration at hotel pickup.
What's not allowed
-
Jewelry, expensive watches, and mobile phones: The operator explicitly advises against bringing these. Dune bashing and sandboarding involve sharp motion and heavy sand exposure, and losses at the site are unrecoverable.
-
Do not eat a full meal before the tour departs. Motion sickness at dune-bashing speed in a 4x4 is a genuine risk — keep the morning meal light and eat before 6am if needed.
-
Passengers with heart disease, serious back conditions, or other significant medical conditions must not join the dune bashing or sandboarding activities. Pregnant guests are excluded from both.
-
Drones are not permitted anywhere in Egypt without prior government clearance; leave yours at home.
-
Children under 2 are not permitted to join the tour.
Accessibility
-
The tour is not wheelchair-accessible. All active stops — the waterfall viewpoint, dune bashing area, sandboarding slope, and camel ride — are on loose sand and uneven rocky desert terrain, with no paved pathways or mobility aids available.
-
Guests with limited mobility can travel in the shared air-conditioned vehicle and access the waterfall photo stop on foot from the vehicle; however, participation in dune bashing, sandboarding, and the camel ride requires unassisted standing, mounting, and dismounting.
-
Strollers are not practical at any of the active stops.
-
Children aged 4 and above can participate fully in all activities; children 12 and older are charged at the adult rate.
Additional information
-
The operator will contact you via WhatsApp, email, or phone the day before the tour to confirm your exact pickup time. The 7am departure is indicative — shared transfer routing means your actual pickup can fall slightly earlier or later depending on your hotel location.
-
Show your mobile voucher to the guide at hotel pickup. No printed copy is required.
-
Dune bashing and sandboarding are weather-dependent and may be cancelled at short notice if conditions are unsafe. The operator will notify you in advance; cancellations due to weather are typically rescheduled rather than refunded.
-
The tour runs approximately 10 hours, returning around 5pm. BBQ lunch and bottled water are provided at the Bedouin camp. There are no ATMs, shops, or card payment facilities once you leave Cairo — sort any cash before departure.
-
Travel insurance covering adventure activities is strongly recommended by the operator; standard travel policies often exclude dune bashing and sandboarding, so verify your coverage before booking.
-
- Your voucher will be emailed to you shortly.
- Display the voucher on your mobile phone with a valid photo ID at the starting point.
- Please check your final voucher for the starting point details & specific instructions.
