In mythology, Delphi was considered the center or omphalos of the Earth, representing the point where two eagles, sent by Zeus from opposite ends of the world, met. As the myth goes, the wilderness of Delphi was chosen by Apollo as a spot to communicate with mortals. He slayed the evil serpent Python, who guarded Delphi and established a temple and oracle at Delphi.

Athena Pronaia

The sanctuary of Athena exudes an ancient aura and remains a mystery to archeologists for they still do not know its purpose. Pronaia means ‘before the temple’. Check out the Tholos, a circular building with an intriguing architectural design found in Athena Pronaia, and take out your cameras for this place makes for incredible pictures.

Delphi stadium and theater

The ancient theater and stadium of Delphi were built for the Pythian Games and various festivals. The theater is nestled in the hillside and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The Delphi stadium is almost entirely intact to this very day. 

Treasury buildings

The Sacred Way that pilgrims took to reach the Temple of Apollo was once adorned with intricately carved treasury buildings, constructed by various ancient Greek city-states to store offerings and gifts dedicated to Apollo. Check out the remains of some of these buildings, especially, the Treasury of Athenians. 

Castalian Spring

A little further from the Athena Pronaia lies the Castalian Spring, where the Pythia washed before the prophecy-giving ceremony. The pilgrims to the temple also washed and drank from this spring. This sacred spring of Delphi was deemed the source of poetic inspiration by Roman poets.

The sanctuary of Apollo, Delphi Archaeological Museum, and the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia are all a short walk from each other. The Archaeological Museum of Delphi has an entrance further down the road from the Archaeological Site. Your ticket usually includes entry to the museum and the site combined, so do not throw it away after visiting one location.

The sanctuary of Apollo, Delphi Archaeological Museum, and the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia are all a short walk from each other. There is one entrance close to the Sanctuary of Apollo, where you can quickly access the Temple of Apollo, theater, stadium, and other ruins. Usually, your entry ticket includes both the entry to this site and the museum.

Athena Pronaia comes first when you travel to Delphi from Athens via Arachova. The entrance to this comes before the Archaeological Site and Museum and is completely free.
