About Casa Milà

A building with NO straight lines? Casa Milà is that architectural rebel designed by Gaudí's whimsy. Pillars, arches replace walls, creating illusionary floor designs. The interior, featuring an exhibition of Gaudí's works, a model apartment from the 1920s, and the stunning rooftop terrace, offers insight into Barcelona's modernist movement.

Did you know?

Attic turned museum: Located in the attic of La Pedrera, you'll discover the Espai Gaudí, Barcelona's only interpretation center dedicated to Gaudí's whole body of work. You may find information on his architectural style and the things that influenced him here.

A master's craft: Casa Milà boasts Gaudí's signature naturalistic architecture, a feat so astounding that not a single right angle graces it. Inside, walls glide effortlessly, a feat achieved by Gaudí's concrete-steel construction, eliminating the need for load-bearing walls—a revolutionary concept echoed in today's modern office buildings. The balconies resemble ocean waves from afar.

Beauty that never sleeps: Passeig de Gràcia hosts a unique light art piece that brings La Pedrera to life at night. Gaudí's Pedrera: The Origins is an interactive exhibit that uses lighting to illuminate various portions of the structure, brightening up the ideas for its design. Having supper in the building is an option, and you can cap it all off with a glass of cava.

Is that...Darth Vader?: The terrace towers of Casa Mila may recall fans of Darth Vader! La Pedrera influenced George Lucas, rumours have it. Is it true? Although no reliable source has corroborated this, the parallels are striking. In fact, almost fifteen movies have been filmed there!

From a design standpoint, the absence of straight lines (and walls) was exciting and quite innovative, but many inhabitants complained that their furniture didn't fit in the oddly shaped rooms. Roser even protested to Gaudí about the lack of a straight wall for her Steinway piano. Gaudí apparently advised her to take up the violin instead.

Why visit Casa Milà?

Not so humble abode

What if Casa Mila was your home? For some, the Pedrera is just that! The name Casa Milà stems from its construction for the well-off Pere Milà and Roser Segimon. After Milà's death, the building was sold and converted into apartments.

Architectural gem

Part of the reason Gaudí's work seems so unique is because it uses several really groundbreaking approaches. Even for those who aren't architecturally savvy, La Pedrera is a captivating edifice. For example, the interior is supported only by a self-supporting stone structure and columns in the patio; no load-bearing walls are present.

Building with no straight lines

“The straight line belongs to men, the curved one to God” was one of Gaudi's many deeply held religious beliefs. There is not a single straight line to be seen when you examine the exterior (or any portion, internal or external) of La Pedrera. The devotion of Gaudí to God and the natural world is evident in every aspect of Casa Mila.

Straight out of a 'Tim Burton' movie

Tim Burton has stated that he was inspired by the work of Antoni Gaudi in his films. Gaudi's use of organic forms and his unique architectural style, especially in Casa Mila are evident in many of Burton's films, such as Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Gaudi's work is often characterized by its use of curves and spirals, which can be seen in the architecture of Gotham City in Batman Returns.

Shaped through criticism

Casa Milà may be beloved by both residents and tourists today, but that wasn't always the case. Actually, its unflattering moniker, La Pedrera (owing to the colourless stone facade) means "The Quarry" in English, and that's hardly a praise. During the early 1900s, it was the target of several biting satires.

The park is very large, so having a map is essential. If you have time, you can discover hidden and fascinating spots. I won’t say anything about the main attractions—you just have to admire them, take pictures, and occasionally reflect on them. It’s a privilege. Easy access.

Great guide, Marc, very knowledgeable and approachable. Group was 25 so a good size. The basillica is just extraordinary! Pictures dont do it justice, you have to see it. Absolutely incredible! I will ask though to please update the meeting point, the restaurant we were given to meet outside doesn't exist anymore, luckily a guide from the company was waiting for us.
