    What our guests say

Really easy to find this workshop—just head for Togetsukyo Bridge and it’s right before you get there. Picking out your wood is a big part of the fun since they have all kinds, from really unique Japanese types to cool colors from other places. The instructor guides you through everything and keeps it fun and easy to understand. It’s a nice change of pace if you’re traveling around and want something hands-on. If you’re checking out Arashiyama, this is a stop you shouldn’t miss—way better than buying a regular souvenir, since you end up with chopsticks that you actually made yourself and can take home as a reminder of your trip!

They sent loads of details to help us find the spot, which made arriving easy. The staff were super welcoming, and each group got their own person to help out with making chopsticks step by step. What you see online is exactly what you get, so no unexpected fees or anything. You can pick from three woods at no extra cost, or pay a bit more for premium ones, and they’ll tell you all about them. For a small fee, you can have your name engraved in kanji—they even help you figure out your name’s meaning. We actually hit it off with the staff and left with awesome memories and our new chopsticks.

This workshop ended up being the best part of our time in busy Kyoto. There were six of us altogether (we were a pair), and each group got their own guide so it felt really personal. We all sat together so there was a chance to talk with the other guests, but you still got individual help at every stage. Directions were clear, and you could choose different types of wood or even add a little engraving to your chopsticks. We loved it, and Mikito was super friendly and always ready to help – really made the experience!

The studio’s super easy to get to, and our hosts really made us feel welcome! Mao, Ho Chen, and Manami all spoke great English, so we had no trouble even though we don’t know Japanese. Everything was explained step by step, and they always had answers for our questions. The price was fair, and we paid a little more to get our names in Kanji, which I totally recommend as an add-on. The session lasted just over an hour, and we honestly enjoyed the whole thing. You should check out this workshop!

Megumi-Sensei made the whole thing awesome! The team spent plenty of time walking us through how to shape and finish our chopsticks, and instructions were super clear. Some wood types are tougher to work with, so it'll keep you busy! If you want something handmade and special from Japan, this is a must. I spent about $35 for the top chopsticks—totally worth it for the quality and custom options.
