Actors were very good: should have been allowed to take photos tho rather than have to pay £20 for two photos. And how are we supposed to attach photos below when we aren't allowed to take them????

Well organised, easy to find and a great experience. It was a perfect activity to entertain our 15 Yr old granddaughter with a few little tricks to keep us on our toes.

we had an amazing time at the york dungeons! it's my second time going and my boyfriends first but even though i've been before it is an amazing experience. it's so interactive (with people from the crowd being chosen to participate!) and the actors involved are so amazing at what they do you forget you're not travelling through different decades of york! i would highly recommend for anyone wanting to add some more fear to their trip to this haunted city!

Wexhad a great day at York Dungeons, from start to finish. Easy receipt of tickets, easy entry , only 15-20 people per slot, so there was no queuing. Actors were fantastic and the actual rooms were really professionally built. Overall 10/10. Top day out for adults and kids (8 yrs +)

All the staff were very friendly and helpful straight from those on the door to those in the gift shop. All the "characters" played their parts so well & interacted with the "peasants" to make the whole experience informative and fun. Definitely worth a visit.

The York Dungeon

Welcome to the York Dungeon, a multi-sensory attraction that plunges you into the blood-curdling stories of York’s past. Recommended for ages 8 and up, this 75-min experience features ten live actor shows, each spotlighting a notorious figure or gruesome event from history.

Features:

Relive York history: From Viking invasions and the Plague to the infamous Guy Fawkes and highwaymen of the 18th century, you’ll walk in the shadows of real terror and murky legend.

Live actor shows: Professional actors in period costumes guide you through ten performances full of chilling tales, dark humour, and historical drama.

Immersive themed sets: Step into movie-like environments, from torture chambers and plague-ridden streets to foggy forests and castle dungeons, each crafted with incredible detail to transport you back in time.

Special effects: From sudden bangs and chilling fog to eerie lighting and realistic sounds, the advanced special effects amplify every twist, turn, and terrifying tale.

Audience participation: You're not just watching, you’re involved. Be ready to answer questions, play roles, or even stand trial as part of the interactive storytelling.

Dark humour: The storytelling blends horror with clever wit and satire, making the experience both thrilling and hilarious.

What’s not allowed

Safety is a priority, so this experience is restricted for guests under the age of 5 years.

Photography is strictly prohibited at the venue.

Accessibility

This experience is partially wheelchair accessible.

Due to constraints of the building's historic structure and layout, The York Dungeon is unable to accommodate electric wheelchairs. However, they offer a manual wheelchair available to borrow throughout your visit. Please note that only one wheelchair can be accommodated per hour.

People with severe claustrophobia, epilepsy, sensitivity to flashing or low lights and loud noises, or those who dislike jump scares are restricted from participating in this experience.

The York Dungeon uses flashing and strobe lights, which may impact visitors with photosensitive epilepsy. If this affects you, inform a staff member immediately so they can brief you on the areas where strobe lighting is used and provide an alternative route if needed.

Your guide dogs are welcome at the venue.

Additional information

This experience is recommended for ages 8+.

Guests under the age of 16 have to be accompanied by someone over the age of 18.

Please arrive a few minutes before your time slot to ensure smooth entry.

If you need to leave the experience at any point, please inform a member of staff or an Actor immediately. They can assist you with a temporary pause backstage, or the Duty Manager will facilitate your exit.

Guest participation is central to the experience, with audience members often selected at random. If you prefer not to participate, please request a yellow sticker from the Admissions team upon entry and place it visibly. You can remove the sticker at any time if you change your mind during the tour.

While actors may come close or engage with you as part of the performance, they will not touch you during your tour, and you are asked not to touch them. Failure to comply with this request may result in your immediate ejection from the attraction without a refund.
