Constructed between 1376 and 1421, it is one of the oldest monumental civic town halls in the Low Countries. Its "Flamboyant Gothic" design directly inspired the iconic city halls of Brussels, Ghent, Leuven, and Oudenaarde.

Unlike many historical monuments converted purely into static museums, the Stadhuis has maintained its administrative role for over 600 years. The city council still meets in the Gothic Hall on the last Monday of every month, and weddings take place here weekly.

The 48 niches on the exterior facade originally held statues of the Counts and Countesses of Flanders, some attributed to Jan van Eyck. French revolutionaries smashed and burned these original statues in 1792; the statues seen today are mid-20th-century reproductions.

While a devastating fire in 1887 damaged parts of the interior, the ceiling's original 14th-century polychrome wooden vaulting and carved corbels (depicting seasons and natural elements) survived and remain intact.
