What to expect
Kyoto Noh workshop
This single-location experience introduces you to Noh, a form of Japanese theater recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, with a tradition spanning 650 years.
Features
An overview of Noh history and tradition starts your session, linking its roots in Japanese mythology with how the art form has been passed down to today. This gives context for what you will later practice and perform.
Hands-on practice with fans, chanting, and steps follows, as you learn the distinctive sliding steps and voice work that define Noh performance. You can focus on coordinating movement and rhythm under the instructor’s guidance.
Insights into instructor-carved Noh masks are shared, so you can observe the craftsmanship that shapes each character’s expression. You then try an on-stage mask try-on to feel how wearing a mask changes your presence and movement.
All tools provided free of charge are laid out for you, including the items needed for the hands-on practice with fans, chanting, and steps, so you do not need to bring any special equipment.
Performance participation alongside a Noh master is the culmination of the workshop, letting you apply your newly learned skills in a structured segment with live guidance.
A certificate of participation is provided at the end, giving you a tangible record of your encounter with Noh to take home.
