Pro tips to help you make a pick

Purchase skip-the-line tickets to avoid waiting in long ticket queues and get priority entry. This will allow you to save time, which you can use to explore the castle and its many attractions.

Peles Castle is best explored with a guided tour. An expert guide will not only show you around but also share interesting anecdotes and give you insights into the fascinating history of the castle.

The castle sees an increase in the number of visitors during midday, especially around noon. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times to visit if you want to explore the castle when it is less crowded.

While visiting Peles Castle, don’t miss out on visiting Pelișor Castle, the other smaller royal residence within the castle complex.

The access route to Peles Castle involves a 20 to 40-minute walk that is mostly uphill. We recommend wearing comfortable and sturdy footwear so that you can explore with ease.

Photography without flash is permitted inside the castle. However, visitors have to pay separate fees in addition to their entry tickets to be able to take pictures within the premises.

Before you leave the castle, go an enjoyable stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens and take in the views of the surrounding mountains.

About Peles Castle

Did you know?

Built with its own power plant on the castle grounds, Peles Castle was the first European castle to have electricity and heating.

The construction of Peles Castle was completed in 10 years, from 1873 to 1883. However, several significant additions, especially to its interiors, were made over the next 30 years up to 1914, when it was finally marked as completed.

More than 600 workers were employed to carve the wooden furnishings, decorations, and furniture throughout Peles Castle.

Why visit Peles Castle?

A fairytale castle

With its fanciful turrets, ornate arches, and beautifully laid out gardens, Peles Castle is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful castles. Explore this stunning palace, which has more than 170 lavishly furnished rooms filled with exquisite artwork, statues, paintings, stained glass, porcelain, and silk treasures.

Opulent interiors

The Romanian royal family spared no expense in embellishing the interiors of Peles Castle. The rooms are adorned with Murano glass and mirrors, silk rugs from Asia, stained glass from Germany, and wall leather from Cordoba. The palace also features paintings from across Europe, bas-relief features, marble fireplaces, and delicate porcelain crockery and decor items. Every artefact and detail exudes luxury and grandeur.

Stunning setting

Set amidst the Carpathian Mountains, Peles Castle is located in an area of outstanding beauty. Enchanted by the scenic landscape of Sinaia, King Carol I decided to build his summer retreat here. The rugged peaks and dense forests provide a majestic backdrop, while the castle’s elevated position provides mesmerising views in every season, enhancing the castle’s architectural splendor.

Rich history

Built in the 19th century by King Carol I, the first monarch of Romania, Peles Castle is steeped in history. The royal family’s belongings and the castle’s furnishings, collected from across Europe and the world, reflect Romania’s political and historical connections. Visit the castle and get a captivating glimpse into the country’s historical and cultural heritage.

Everything was wonderful, organized down to the smallest detail. The staff were professional, knowledgeable, and reliable. Elena was our Italian-speaking guide, and she was truly the best—congratulations. Unfortunately, I don't remember the driver's name, but he was also excellent. I recommend Italians to rely on them. 🔝🔝👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻

The positives - each castle has it's own distinct charm and attraction. You get time to explore each and it's a long day excursion (12-13hrs) so you get a lot for your money. The negatives - the guide will try to aggressively sell you entrance/experience tickets at hugely inflated prices (more than double the gate price). The guide may also get quite abrupt and rude with you. Stay strong. You can visit the grounds of Pelés and Cantacuzino without paying an entry fee. You're only paying to go inside for an "experience". Personally we were happy with seeing both for free. There were extensive grounds to explore in the alloted time. We were told that Bran Castle would have a 1hr queue so if we didn't buy the guide's offer (420 Lei for that single castle) then we wouldn't get in. We happened to arrive after 5pm on a Friday and bought our own entry ticket on arrival with no queue (200 Lei - 100 per person). Different to the other castles, you cannot visit the grounds of Bran without a ticket. Your choice, but we were happy with our gamble on this occasion and it payed off for us. Lastly, the 3 entry prices quoted on this app (100 Lei, 70 Lei and 70 Lei) are out of date. Check online beforehand. One other thing, we had free cancellation until midday before our excursion. At 12.02 (2 minutes after the deadline, quite deliberate in my opinion) we received a text message to say Pelés Castle was fully booked and they would take the group to the smaller Pelisor Castle (and still charged more then double the full cost for Pelés Castle). Both are in the same location, so while the group paid and got a worse experience, in my opinion, we paid nothing extra and had a great walk and lots of photos from the grounds. In summary, I was prepared to give this a 1 star review as the guide was very aggressive, the organisation beforehand felt shambolic and the prices quoted were frankly a rip off. However, we enjoyed the castles. It was a great day and the experience won us over

An outstanding experience. Well worth the trip. You can reach it easily by train from Budapest, but allow enough time for the journey (and for unexpected rail delays). It is a bit of a walk from the station, but the walk also takes you past the casino and the monastery.
