Pro tips to help you make a pick

Book your Krka National Park tickets at least a week in advance, especially if you are visiting during the peak season. Due to its popularity, the park has a cap on visitor numbers, with only 10,000 people allowed in per day.

To avoid crowds and have a more peaceful experience, visit Krka National Park on weekday mornings rather than weekends. On weekdays, it’s best to visit closer to the opening time (at 8am from April to mid-October, or 9am from mid-October to March).

Consider exploring the park with a guided tour. A knowledgeable local guide will take you around the best spots in the park, including the cultural and heritage sites like the watermills and the ethno village, and share interesting stories about the park’s history.

Regardless of when you visit the park, check the weather conditions and pack sufficient rain and sun protection. The weather can turn unexpectedly, and it’s best to be prepared with umbrellas, rain jackets, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and a change of clothes, especially if you’re planning to swim, to ensure a comfortable visit.

Explore the park’s more remote attractions. While the Skradinski Buk waterfall is the main draw, the park also has other gems like Roški Slap and Manojlovac waterfalls, the Visovac and Krka monasteries, and Oziđana Pećina cave, where evidence of Stone Age settlements has been found. Some of these are located farther away from the main areas, but you will not regret the detour to visit them.

Stay hydrated while visiting the park, especially during the summer, as temperatures can get quite high and there is a lot of walking to do. Carry a large reusable water bottle with you, so that you can refill it at the attractions you visit.

Carry packed snacks and lunch. Food is not easily available at the park, and it is cheaper and more convenient to carry your own.

The areas surrounding the waterfalls in the national park have one of the densest concentrations of natural lavender in Europe. As a result, the area has a proportionally high concentration of bees and wasps as well.

The Krka River is not the only river within the national park. A portion of the Čikola River, a tributary of the Krka, is also located within the park’s boundaries.

Formed due to centuries of geological activity, the falls consist of a series of cascades, large and small, flowing over travertine barriers (limestone formations). Incredible lookout points

There’s no shortage of panoramic views at Krka National Park, and the best vistas are seen from viewpoints strategically located throughout the nature reserve. Go on a hike on one of the scenic trails to get to these observation points, which overlook the Krka River. You’re rewarded with bird’s-eye views of forested slopes on either side of the river as it winds its way through the park.

Scenic boat tours

The Krka River forms the backbone of the national park and the best way to explore it is by boat. Enjoy a leisurely sail down the river and admire the rocky cliffs, spot medieval ruins, and visit the historic monasteries. The boat ride gives you ample time to relax and soak in the beauty of the park, especially the river itself, which dazzles with its ever-changing shades of blue and green.

Swimming in pristine waters

Nothing beats a cooling dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Krka River on a hot summer’s day. Unlike other nature reserves, Krka National Park permits swimming, but only in certain designated areas and during certain times of the year. Don’t miss the chance to take a plunge in the turquoise pools near Roški Slap, against the incredible backdrop of the falls.

Highlights

Skradinski Buk

Krka National Park’s most popular attraction, the Skradinski Buk waterfall is a magnificent set of 17 cascades and pools falling from a height of 45 metres. It is also formed on the longest travertine barrier in Europe. You can hike to the falls via the trails and use the wooden walkways to explore the beautiful surroundings.

Roški Slap

The Roški Slap waterfalls are located in a particularly picturesque area of the park. This 650-meter-long series of cascades is locally known as “the Necklaces” for its beauty. Depending on the time of the day and the light, the water here reflects a variety of blue and green shades, from turquoise to emerald to teal.

Visovac monastery

Set on a small island in the middle of Krka lake, Visovac is a Franciscan monastery built in 1445. Comprising a church, a library, and a museum, the monastery complex holds many important Christian relics. Accessible by boat, it is steeped in history and natural beauty.

Manojlovac waterfall

Manojlovac is not only Krka National Park’s tallest waterfall, it is also one of its more secluded attractions. Accessible via hiking trails, these remote 59-meter cascades offer a pristine environment abundant with natural beauty, perfect for capturing amazing photographs.

Krka Monastery

Built in the 15th century, Krka Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located on the banks of the Krka River. The complex, which includes a Byzantine church and an 18th-century bell tower, is said to be built on top of ancient Roman catacombs. It houses many historical manuscripts and rare books related to the Christian Orthodox church.

Krka Hydroelectric Power Plant

In 1895, Europe’s first hydroelectric power station was built on the Krka River. No longer in use today, the Krka hydroelectric power plant played a huge role in the region’s industrialization, providing electricity to the nearby city of Sibenik. Today, it remains an important historical monument which has been preserved as a cultural asset.

Burnum archaeological site & amphitheatre

In the 1st century AD, the Krka region was part of the Roman Empire. The Romans built a military base at Burnum to house its legions, the remnants of which are visible today as a large archaeological site within the national park. It includes a partially restored amphitheatre among other buildings. Findings from the site have been displayed as part of the collection at Krka Eco Campus at Puljane.

Plan your visit

Lozovac

Lozovac

This is the main entrance to Krka National Park, and the most used by both individual visitors as well as tour groups. From April to October, shuttle buses are available to transport visitors to Skradinski Buk waterfall, or they can hike the scenic 875-meter trail to get there. In winter, visitors can enter with their own vehicles. Free parking is available year-round near this entrance.

Skradin

Skradin

This is the second most popular entrance to the national park. Boats to the Skradinski Buk waterfall as well as boat tours of the park depart from this entrance. Hiking and bicycle trails also begin from here to the falls and other parts of the park. Do keep in mind that boat transportation to Skradinski Buk and back is available from April to October and closed from November to March. Limited parking facilities are available here.

Roški slap waterfall/Laškovica

Roški slap waterfall/Laškovica

This is the closest road entrance to the Roški slap waterfall. From here, you can also take boat tours to Krka Monastery and Visovac Island from April to October. Bus services from Laškovica to Roški slap and the locality of Stinice operate from June to September. Parking is limited but most visitors access the falls by boat, so it is not difficult to find a spot.

Burnum/Puljane

Burnum/Puljane

This is the closest entrance to the Burnum archaeological site as well as the Eco Campus in Puljane, where the Burnum archaeological collection is displayed. Keep in mind that while the archaeological collection at the Eco Campus is open all year round, the Burnum amphitheatre is closed from November to February. Visitor parking is available at this entrance.

Kistanje/Krka monastery

Kistanje/Krka monastery

This entrance allows you to access the national park through the Krka Monastery, which is located close to Kistanje. You can take boat tours to visit the Roški slap waterfall and a couple of nearby medieval fortresses of Nečven and Trošenj. Everything was just great! Ftom the bus to the guide and the stop in a lake beach prior the entrance to the lake. The boat ride to the park was such a thrill as well the park path and the falls...simply a must!

Sure, but don't expect to spend half a day there. It's best to go in the morning as soon as it opens—there will be far fewer people. It gets crowded very quickly. The scenery is magnificent. I've included some photos so as not to spoil the surprise.

The tour was simply amazing, especially the breathtaking views in the National Park of the Waterfalls. Our guide, Mate, was also very friendly and went out of his way to ensure we had the best possible experience. He provided detailed descriptions and offered tips, which helped us find our way around and enjoy our time in the national park. This made us feel very safe in an unfamiliar place. Especially if you’re traveling in Croatia without a car, this tour is a great option because it starts in Trogir, saving you the trouble of getting to and from the national park. I definitely recommend this tour. The waterfalls were a highlight of my vacation in Croatia.

The journey to the park was easy, in an air conditioned Bus. We had just over 2 hrs at the park, which was plenty, we could have seen more of the attractions, but chose to have a snack and an ice cream at the end. Top tip, take water with you, it's €4.50 per bottle at the vendor at the start of the trip. It's easy to walk around on a wooden walkway, I would say plan up to 2hrs for your visit. Our tour guide Ela was very knowledgeable, and gave a lot of history on the journey. There was a swim stop at Scradin, which was lovely, The public toilets costong €1 (cash or contactless) also have a shower, not sure if there's an extra charge. We chose the wine tasting, and had an additional prosciutto & Cheese platter for €20, cash. We were dropped at the same pick up point at around 5pm after a lovely day.
