The Philosopher's Path is a canal that was meant for factories. Kyoto finished it in 1890 to turn water wheels; electricity made the plan obsolete, and the bank became one of the city's quietest walks.
Start at the gate of Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion that was never silver. Walk upstream beside water that runs north, past Honen-in's mounds of white sand, the cherry trees a painter planted in 1922, and the lane to Otoyo Shrine and its guardian mice. At the end of the path, leave the canal for Eikan-do, home of the Buddha who looks back, and Nanzen-ji's great wooden Sanmon, rebuilt in 1628. Finish under the fourteen brick arches of the Suirokaku aqueduct, a National Treasure since 2025.
Ten stops, about 3.1 km and 90 minutes, at your own pace, in English, on gentle ground. Entry to Ginkaku-ji, Eikan-do and the Sanmon's upper floor is not included.
