Getting started
Meet your local guide at the designated starting point in Dar es Salaam's old town and get a brief outline of the walking route. Once the group is ready, you set off on foot into the historic streets with your guide leading the way. Have comfortable shoes and water with you, as this is a guided walking tour without scheduled food or drink stops.
What to expect
Askari Monument
Your first main stop is the Askari Monument, located in the heart of Dar es Salaam's old town. Here, you pause to look closely at this landmark while your guide introduces the city's colonial past.
Features
At the Askari Monument, you see the central statue and surrounding plaques while hearing stories about Dar es Salaam's history, including how this memorial connects to the colonial era.
Your guide uses this stop to share broader stories about the city's culture and hidden gems, helping you place the rest of the walking tour in context.
Azania Front Lutheran Church
Continuing through the old town streets, you arrive at the Azania Front Lutheran Church. This church is one of the prominent religious buildings in the area and forms a key part of the route.
Features
Outside and around the Azania Front Lutheran Church, you have time to admire its architecture while your guide points out details that reflect the period in which it was built.
During this stop, your local guide continues the guided walking tour commentary with stories about Dar es Salaam's culture and how communities around the church have evolved.
St. Joseph’s Cathedral
Next, the route brings you to St. Joseph’s Cathedral. This is another of Dar es Salaam's notable churches and a highlight of the old town landmarks included in your visit.
Features
As you stand by St. Joseph’s Cathedral, you can take in the building's exterior and setting while hearing about its role in the city's past.
Your guide adds more stories about Dar es Salaam's history and living culture here, connecting St. Joseph’s to other hidden gems you pass along the way.
Old Boma
You then make your way to the Old Boma, a historic structure in the old town and one of the last key stops on the walk. This building helps round out the picture of Dar es Salaam's development over time.
Features
At the Old Boma, you see the building from the outside and hear how it fits into the old town's layout and history, guided by your local expert.
