I had a genuinely enjoyable and surprisingly refreshing experience at the Vienna History Museum. What stood out to me personally was the way the lighting and atmosphere changed with each theme. The dim, carefully designed lighting created an immersive environment without causing the headache or mental exhaustion that museums can sometimes leave me with. Instead, I felt fresh, curious, and capable of absorbing new information throughout my visit. I especially enjoyed the phone-style audio handsets at certain exhibits, which offered additional insights, as well as the interactive mechanisms in the meteorite section. They allowed me to explore the exhibits more closely and made the experience feel personal. I have a meteorite stone in my wedding ring, so this section became one of my favourite moments of the visit. One small disappointment was finding the cafeteria closed when I wanted to stop for a coffee. It would be lovely if it remained open until the museum itself closes, giving visitors a chance to relax and reflect on what they have seen. On the positive side, the soft benches tucked into some corners were a thoughtful touch, offering a comfortable place to sit, rest, and recharge before continuing. The museum shop was another pleasant surprise: cute, inviting, and reasonably priced, with something for visitors with different budgets to take home as a memory. Overall, this was more than just an informative museum visit. It was thoughtfully designed, engaging, and comfortable, allowing me to enjoy learning at my own pace without feeling overwhelmed. Definitely worth visiting!

Unser (3Freundinnen) Trip nach Wien war ein voller Erfolg! Nachdem wir uns , im Vorfeld, ein Apartment gebucht haben, (nur 4 Minuten von der U-Bahn entfernt), haben wir 3 wundervolle Tage in Österreich's schöner Hauptstadt verbracht. Geplant waren Museumsbesuche bei Kunst und Naturhistorischen Museum, Oberes und Unteres Belvedere, sowie das Hundertwasser Haus. Dank der Online Kombitickets von Headhout lief der Eintritt immer Komplikationslos (per Handy App) und war etwas günstiger. Spontan haben wir uns entschlossen auch die Lichtschow in der Votivkirche zu besuhen, sie war sehr eindrucksvoll! Zwischendurch haben wir auf dem Stefansplatz, Nähe Stefansdom flaniert. Die Fortbewegung wurde ebenfalls per Wien Mobil App im Vorfeld bezahlt und ermöglichte uns ein unkompliziertes fahren von A nach B mit der U-Bahn. Wien ist eine wunderschöne Stadt mit vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten, Kunst und gutem Essen, sowie Grünanlagen zum verweilen. Besuch auf jeden Fall empfehlenswert!

Von grossartig bis überwältigend Dieses Museum zeigt auf einzigartige Weise, wozu wir Menschen fähig sind, wenn Künstler und Gönner zusammen Kreativität zu bleibenden Werten freisetzen. Über die Jahrhunderte hinweg können wir uns von Werken ansprechen lassen, als wenn wir die Stimmung oder die Szene selbst erlebt hätten, so anschaulich ist es geworden. Denken Sie in jedem Fall daran, sich zu stärken und geniessen Sie auch den Kaffee unter der Kuppel.

Great value combo ticket for the art and natural History museum which are directly opposite each other in the museum quarter. Really enjoyed both museums. Must stop by the cafe in the art museum for coffee and cake (try the apple strudel and cream). You'll be hard pushed to find a more beautiful setting anywhere in Vienna. So much to see in both museums so allow yourself a good 2-3 hours per museum. Enjoy.

Museo meraviglioso sotto ogni punto di vista. Le stanze davvero ben curate e facili da percorrere. Non essendo un amante dei musei, l'ho apprezzato davvero tanto.

Enter a world of wonder

Kick off your visit at the Natural History Museum on Maria-Theresien-Platz, where the main entrance leads you beneath the grand central dome. After a quick and straightforward security check, you’ll find yourself at the base of an opulent staircase surrounded by marble columns and ceiling frescoes. From there, the museum opens up into 39 exhibition halls filled with everything from prehistoric fossils and Ice Age creatures to meteorites, minerals, and early human artifacts.

Don’t miss the animatronic Allosaurus in the dinosaur hall or the chance to touch a real meteorite. One of the smallest treasures here is also the most famous: the 29,500-year-old Venus of Willendorf, displayed in a quiet, climate-controlled case that draws curious visitors from around the world.

Make your way across the square

Once you've soaked in the natural wonders, head outside and walk across the same square—just a 2-minute stroll—to reach the Kunsthistorisches Museum. It’s the twin of the Natural History Museum, built in symmetrical grandeur directly across the plaza. Enter through the impressive stone staircase leading up to the main doors, where another security check awaits. Inside, you’ll step into an ornate marble atrium with sweeping staircases, arched ceilings, and sculptures that feel like a work of art on their own.

Step into imperial grandeur

At Kunsthistorisches Museum, you can explore galleries filled with masterpieces by Bruegel, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Raphael, and Vermeer. The Picture Gallery is a must-see, but don’t skip the Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection, where ancient sarcophagi and inscribed stelae bring millennia of history into focus.

The museum’s layout is easy to follow, and helpful signage (in German and English) makes it simple to navigate through painting galleries, antiquities, and decorative arts. The central dome ceiling—painted with allegorical figures—is worth pausing under for a moment of awe.

Pets are not permitted inside the museum; only certified assistance animals, such as guide dogs, are allowed.

Photography with flash or any form of professional filming equipment is not allowed without advance written permission.

The museum is partially wheelchair accessible, with ramp entry via Burgring 7 and elevator access to all exhibition floors. However, the rooftop tour is not accessible due to stairs and limited space.

You can borrow wheelchairs at no cost from the information desk, but they’re available on a limited basis and can't be reserved in advance.

Natural History Museum

To make the most of your visit, arrive early—last admission is 30 minutes before closing (5:30pm from Thursday to Monday and 7:30pm on Wednesdays).

The main entrance is located on Maria-Theresien-Platz, 1010 Vienna, with the ticket counter directly in front. If you're using a wheelchair, please head to the accessible side entrance on Burgring 7.

The information counter is inside the museum in the Entrance Hall (Unterer Kuppelsaal).

Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the visit.

Most visitors begin on the ground floor, so starting on the upper levels (especially in the morning) gives you a quieter experience in the fossil, anthropology, and meteorite halls.

Lockers are free to use, but you’ll need a €1 coin to lock them, which you’ll get back afterward.

Strollers are welcome, though staff may ask you to park them temporarily in designated spots during busy times.

The café beneath the central dome serves hot dishes, drinks, and fresh pastries daily (closed Tuesdays).

A museum shop is located on the ground floor and offers books, minerals, educational games, and fossil-themed gifts.

Kunsthistorisches Museum

Take a moment in the grand staircase to admire Gustav Klimt’s early paintings around the upper walls, often missed by those hurrying up to the galleries.

Don’t skip the Kunstkammer (Chamber of Art and Wonders), home to rare automata, strange curiosities, and beautifully carved ivory pieces you won’t find elsewhere.
