Overall, the museum itself was impressive. The exterior and interior architecture was beautiful, and the standard exhibits were wonderful. I learned a lot about the history of Europe through the artwork. We also ate lunch at the cafe, which was a great experience, with good food and wonderful service. A few items prevented the review from reaching five stars. First, the entry experience was somewhat frustrating, as the voucher line was very slow. It would be better to get tickets directly to skip this line. Second, several of the rooms had no English, so we did not understand the context. Finally, the special coin exhibit was very limited or possibly closed. I would highly recommend this museum, and some small improvements would make it perfect.

Es war sehr interessant und umfangreich! Ein Tag ist fast zu wenig. Das Gebäude ist auch ein Augenweide. Was uns weniger gefallen hat, man kann das Gebäude nicht verlassen um frische Luft zu schnappen. Man sollte erneut den Eintritt bezahlen. Die Sälle sind sehr schlecht belüftet. Beim 18 € Eintritt würde ich schon erwarten, dass man eine Pause in der frischen Luft machen kann.

Our child absolutely loved it and was fully engaged throughout the visit. The dinosaur exhibits were a highlight, as well as the interactive displays that made learning fun and memorable. There is a perfect balance between visual presentation and informative content, which keeps both kids and adults interested. We spent several hours inside and still felt like there was more to explore. Everything is clearly labeled in English as well, which made it very easy for us to understand and enjoy every section. Overall, it was one of the best museum experiences we’ve had. It’s not just a place to see exhibits, but a place to spark curiosity and imagination. We left very satisfied and with great memories. Definitely worth a visit!

This is a must see for any art lovers. I'll have to include any architecture fans as well. The building is amazing. Make sure to leave plenty of time, it very large, and don't miss the cafe! Can you find the Klimt frescos? We did.

Kick off your visit at the Natural History Museum on Maria-Theresien-Platz, where the main entrance leads you beneath the grand central dome. After a quick and straightforward security check, you’ll find yourself at the base of an opulent staircase surrounded by marble columns and ceiling frescoes. From there, the museum opens up into 39 exhibition halls filled with everything from prehistoric fossils and Ice Age creatures to meteorites, minerals, and early human artifacts.

Don’t miss the animatronic Allosaurus in the dinosaur hall or the chance to touch a real meteorite. One of the smallest treasures here is also the most famous: the 29,500-year-old Venus of Willendorf, displayed in a quiet, climate-controlled case that draws curious visitors from around the world.

Make your way across the square

Once you've soaked in the natural wonders, head outside and walk across the same square—just a 2-minute stroll—to reach the Kunsthistorisches Museum. It’s the twin of the Natural History Museum, built in symmetrical grandeur directly across the plaza. Enter through the impressive stone staircase leading up to the main doors, where another security check awaits. Inside, you’ll step into an ornate marble atrium with sweeping staircases, arched ceilings, and sculptures that feel like a work of art on their own.

Natural History Museum

To make the most of your visit, arrive early—last admission is 30 minutes before closing (5:30pm from Thursday to Monday and 7:30pm on Wednesdays).

The main entrance is located on Maria-Theresien-Platz, 1010 Vienna, with the ticket counter directly in front. If you're using a wheelchair, please head to the accessible side entrance on Burgring 7.

The information counter is inside the museum in the Entrance Hall (Unterer Kuppelsaal).

Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the visit.

Most visitors begin on the ground floor, so starting on the upper levels (especially in the morning) gives you a quieter experience in the fossil, anthropology, and meteorite halls.

Lockers are free to use, but you’ll need a €1 coin to lock them, which you’ll get back afterward.
