Once part of one of Europe's largest fortresses, the battlements were how the Visconti and Sforza dynasties watched over Milan for centuries. Today, they're quiet, elevated, and offer a side of the castle most visitors never see.

• Battlement walkway: Stroll the ramparts as your guide unpacks the castle's military past, from medieval defense to its uneasy 19th-century role. Stop for views over the courtyards, the Sempione skyline, and (on clear days) the Duomo's spires in the distance.

• Room of the Falcons: Step inside this storied chamber, once covered in velvet walls embroidered with silver. Your guide explains how Sforza dukes used it for ceremony, statecraft, and a bit of theatre.
