The East Side Gallery is the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall, painted in 1990 by 118 artists from 21 countries. But it was the inner wall, facing East Berlin: here the river itself was the border.
Start behind the Wall in the park by the Spree, where border guards once watched the water, then come out to the painted face. Follow Thierry Noir's heads, the Trabant, the Wall Jumper and the Sakharov panel to the famous kiss of Brezhnev and Honecker, and find out why almost every mural you see is a second version. End by crossing the towered brick Oberbaum Bridge, once a border crossing on foot, into Kreuzberg and the elevated station at Schlesisches Tor.
Nine stops, about 1.5 km and 60 minutes, at your own pace, in English. Flat, outdoors and free to visit; the walk mentions deaths at the border.
What to bring

What's not allowed
- Defacing the gallery: Do not write or paint on the East Side Gallery, as it is a listed monument.
Accessibility
- Wheelchair access: Wheelchair users can use the park's upper paths but cannot use the path along the riverbank.
- Step-free entrance: A step-free entrance is available from Mühlenstrasse at Brommystrasse.

- Start point access: Reach the start at S Ostbahnhof; exit at Stralauer Platz and enter Park an der Spree at its north-west end.
- Do not start at: Avoid starting at Warschauer Strasse, which is at the opposite end of the gallery.
- End point: The walk ends at U Schlesisches Tor on U1 and U3, where the lift serves only the platform toward Uhlandstrasse.
- Nearby station: For S-Bahn after the walk, use Warschauer Strasse station two minutes back over the bridge on U1.
- Bus options: Use bus 300 at East Side Gallery or Tamara-Danz-Strasse if you want to shorten the walk.
- Alternative route: If the wall opening between stops 2 and 3 is closed, return to Stralauer Platz and follow the sidewalk on the painted side.
- Crowded murals: Expect crowds at the Kiss at stop 6, the Trabant near stop 3, and the Sakharov panel bus stop at stop 5.
- Bag safety: Watch your bags in busy spots and keep clear of the bus queue near the Sakharov panel.
- Narrow sidewalks: Stay on the curb side of Mühlenstrasse's narrow sidewalks and never step into the road for photos.
- Cycle tracks: Keep to the wall side and look for cyclists on the last stretch before the bridge and on the bridge footways.
- Unsignaled crossings: Look carefully both ways at the three unsignaled crossings on the Kreuzberg side of the bridge.
- Traffic lights: Use the light-controlled crossings at Köpenicker, Schlesische Strasse, and Skalitzer Strasse, and note the cycle track between them.
- Train noise: Pause the audio when subway trains cross the bridge, as they are loud and may drown out the narration.
- Scenic notes: At dusk, watch for Thorsten Goldberg's Rock, Paper, Scissors light work in the bridge's steelwork.
- Nearby landmark: The Molecule Man sculpture stands about one kilometer upstream of Oberbaumbrücke on the river.
- Live guides: The Berlin Wall Foundation sometimes offers free live-speaking guides at the gallery on weekend afternoons.
- Busy panels: The Kiss and the Trabant are busiest later, so a morning start is usually quieter.
- Seasonal note: The street side is fully open to the sky year-round, while park trees keep their leaves into October.
