About The Great Wall of China

Great Wall tours cover very different environments. Mutianyu pairs dense forest and closely spaced watchtowers with cable car and chairlift access, Badaling offers wide restored paths split between north and south sections, and Jinshanling mixes restored stretches with older fabric and long ridge walks. Some itineraries extend to Shanhaiguan, where the Wall reaches the Bohai Sea.

Did you know?

The Great Wall is a network built and rebuilt from the 3rd century BCE through the Ming dynasty, stretching for ~21,000 km when branches and natural barriers are counted.

Badaling was the first Great Wall section opened to tourists, in 1957.

Mutianyu's surrounding area is over ~90% wooded, according to official section information.

Tickets are usually checked just inside a section's main gate or before cable car or chairlift boarding, rather than through one unified Wall entrance.

The Mutianyu toboggan uses a metal track and hand brake, with riders asked to follow spacing instructions from staff.

Why visit The Great Wall of China?

Walk a UNESCO World Heritage fortification

The Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site made up of defensive walls and fortifications whose earliest components date back over two millennia. Walking its battlements and beacon towers gives the visit both historical depth and a strong sense of scale across northern China.

Choose between restored sections and rugged hikes

Restored sections such as Mutianyu and Badaling suit classic sightseeing, while Jinshanling, Gubeikou, and Jiankou-linked routes appeal to travelers who want longer or more rugged walks. The same landmark can therefore feel like a gentle lookout stroll or a full hiking day, depending on the section you choose.

Use cable cars, chairlifts, and the Mutianyu toboggan

At Mutianyu, make the most of your visit with a cable car or open-air chairlift ride up, followed by an exhilarating toboggan descent. Badaling also offers cable car access, making it easier to save your energy for exploring the Wall itself. These options reduce the climb and give you more time to enjoy the spectacular ridge-top views and walk along the historic fortifications.

See how the Wall changes from section to section

Mutianyu stands out for its lush forested surroundings and impressive concentration of watchtowers, while Jinshanling offers a more rugged experience, with crenels, shooting holes, and beacon towers spread across a mix of restored and older stretches. Each section has its own character, giving you a chance to experience the Great Wall through different landscapes, architecture, and levels of restoration.

Fit the visit into a Beijing or Tianjin itinerary

Most visitors reach the Wall on day trips from Beijing, but there are also city combo tours and Tianjin cruise-port shore excursions. That makes it possible to choose a Wall-focused day, add sights such as the Summer Palace or Forbidden City, or fit a visit into a cruise stop.

Plan your visit

Mutianyu Main Tourist Entrance

This entrance is at the Mutianyu visitor center complex in Huairou District and is the standard approach for most tours and independent visitors. The visitor center itself has step-free access, though the Wall beyond it still involves steep gradients and stairs.

Badaling Main Entrance (Tourist Center area)

This entrance is near the main Badaling service area and the Badaling Great Wall Museum. It is the usual entry point for most tours and first-time visitors. Badaling has wide restored paths and cable cars, but visitors should still expect slopes and steps.

Jinshanling Main Gate

This is the main visitor entrance for Jinshanling in Luanping County, Hebei. It is commonly used for hiking and photography-focused visits. The section is steeper and less developed than the main Beijing-area sightseeing sections.
