Solheimajokull Glacier
What to expect
Solheimajokull is an outlet glacier near Vik, shaped by nearby volcanoes and streaked with layers of black ash. Once you reach the ice edge on a short approach walk, the guided hike on Solheimajokull Glacier begins across solid blue ice formations.
Features
-
Views reach across the glacier’s ridges, deep blue crevasses, and unique moulins, the vertical ice holes that sink into the glacier’s interior. You follow an easy walking route that keeps to accessible terrain while still bringing you close to these features.
-
A certified, professional glacier guide leads the route, sets the pace, and explains how volcanic eruptions and climate have sculpted the ice and surrounding landscape.
-
Specialized glacier safety gear is included for the hike, with glacier crampons, a walking ice axe, helmet, and harness fitted before you step onto the ice so you can move securely on frozen surfaces.
-
This is a small group experience, which allows your guide to adjust the path to the group’s comfort level and gives you time for questions and photos on the glacier.
